FROM THE PUBLISHER "In the land of Gwynedd, the Haldanes have long ruled and have long kept a dangerous secret: there are those of their blood who possess the magical powers of the Deryni. To be Deryni in a land ruled by the all-powerful Church is to be branded an outcast." "But now, young Prince Kelson is about to assume the throne after the mysterious death of his father. He must be told of his magical heritage. For his legacy is being challenged by a woman who does not hesitate to lay full claim to her Deryni powers. And to face her in magical combat, Kelson must learn a lifetime's worth of magic in a few short days." If he loses, he dies as his father had. And if he wins, he is King - but all the world will know that he is also Deryni.

When I signed up for this BookRing I didn't have a clue this was a fantasy classic and that the Deryni world was so extensive. I consulted Fantastic Fiction and I found out this author has written tons of books about this world and its characters. Can I just say, help! I mean, now I will have to find more books from this series and I really don't need to add anything to my huge TBR. Anyway, about Deryni Rising, it was a wonderful surprise to find a story filled with all the ingredients to make me want to keep reading till the end and still want more after that. It has treachery, court intrigues, well hidden secrets, unexplained hates and magic. I loved it! It's such a light and fun story and now I want to know what happens next, thankfully the ending doesn't leave you hanging. Thanks for a wonderful BookRing efs300! :o)

Or later, perhaps, if I could find some here in France, but in English...translation in french wouldn't be well I think Nevertheless, thanks for this book. -JAFFA- was Pmed 5mins ago...book will be in UK soon! Journal Entry 12 by Nell-Lu from Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom on Wednesday, December 14, 2005
This snuck to the top of my TBR pile by being the only book I had handy in a quiet moment yesterday evening. I found myself reading the whole thing in one sitting - it is fast-paced and interesting enough that I wanted to know what happened next. The writing is very readable and overall it is an entertaining book. The plot and characters are rather familiar from other fantasy novels - but perhaps in 1970 this was breaking new ground? I don't know much about the historical development of the genre. There were some elements that annoyed me (for example, the female characters are all evil, stupid, or unreasonable to the point of being deranged; and the mysterious black bodyguards of the evil sorceress are, literally, black - the only "Moors" in the book). I also found that it read as a prequel to the rest of the series rather than standing alone - there wasn't much actual content. However, as light entertainment it worked fine. I'm not going to give a star rating to this book because I really struggle to rate fiction that doesn't break out of its genre. I'd happily recommend this book to fans of fantasy novels looking for a quick read, but wouldn't consider passing a copy to anyone who didn't usually read the genre. Does that make it a 7 star book or a 3 star book? I've PMed cloggy so will pass this on once I get an address. Thanks again for sharing, efs300. UPDATE, 15 December 2005: I have cloggy's address, so will take this to the Post Office this afternoon.

Enjoyable and easy read. I agree with Nell-Lu that much seems scene setting for the next two books in the series, but the story still kept my interest. Will keep my eyes peeled for the other two volumes as Deryni Rising did wet my appetite. Got Whitehorsy's addy, so will try to put it in the post tomorrow

Journal Entry 15 by whitehorsy from Hasselt, Limburg / Limbourg Belgium on Sunday, January 15, 2006
This book was waiting for me when I got home last Friday... I've started reading today. Having reached page 57 I can already tell you that I enjoy the story and that I'm really curious about the rest of the story. I had never heard of 'The chronicles of the Deryni' before and that's what's so fun about bookcrossing... I have the chance to read books that I normally never would have found or read. Thanks efs300 for letting me join this ray. Thanks cloggy for sending it along and for the beautiful postcard of London! :-)

This book has kept me good company on the train! I'm not a big fantasy reader, I don't know why, I think I would enjoy it a lot though. So, this was a nice change in my usual reading pattern. I've really enjoyed the book and might even read the sequels if I ever happen to come across them. :-) Thanks for sharing efs300! I will be sending this book to jessicaloveyou in Singapore tomorrow. Thursday 19th: sent off to jessicaloveyou by surface mail

I started reading this book, but just couldn't get into it. I have quite a few other books to read at the moment, and one of the OBCZs in Canberra really needs to be stocked up, so I am going to release it there tonight at the first Canberra Booking of the year. Thanks gr02 for sending me this book - it really was a nice surprise, and I've been meaning to try Katherine Kurtz for a while, so I'm sorry I didn't really do justice to it.
