What a charming book. It was full of the ideals of friendship, hard work, loyalty, dreams, all of those wonderful things we want to remind children of without preaching. And, this book isn't preachy. It has enough tension and detail to keep your attention.
As I read it, I imagine reading it with 2 of my grandkids. He's 11, and I can hear him asking about the technical stuff-he's also a sailor, so he will be attuned to the details. She, on the other hand, at 7, will want to know what kind of rock star, what is a berth, and I can already hear her comments on brothers!

I've already mentioned that I love the sketches!
It's a great story, and one meant for sharing.
PS. I hope that Chloe is in the next one.

I've sent this on to tyvmdear.

About the ancient ferret alphabet (Ferrune) symbols: the fable that opens each book of the series is written in Ferrune, then on the following pages in the English alphabet, sort of a ferret Rosetta Stone. So if a reader's really interested, she can translate the runic symbols. That's the only way (except in the fifth book of the series (which will be the first in _Curious Lives,_ the collection in one volume), to translate the phrase on the dedication page.

What an adorable book and the characters are so believable. I could see the ferrets scamping around the ship as they were setting off on their next mission. I do believe that my heart skipped a beat or two when Vincent fell overboard.
I also hope that Chloe is in the next book(s), I want to see her relationship with Boa continue/evolve.
The illustrations are wonderful, there was just enough of them.
Thank you for incuding in the journal entry how to decode the Ferrune text. I really enjoyed doing that and being able to read the phrase on the dedication page.

This is a very quick read and a real page turner.
As stated already, this is a book to be shared and would be great read out loud.
If I have time, I think I will read it to my 11 yr old son before I send it on to Sqdancer
(just waiting for her/his address).

Thank you again for sharing this with us all.

My 11 1/2 yr old son's review (in his own words):

I liked every part of this book. It is a really really really good book. It is the best book that I read this year and last year.

My favorite part of this book was all of it. I liked every single picture in the book, they were very detailed.

Thank you for letting me read this book.
Thank you from Zach.

I rate this book 10 thousand.

Very enjoyable book. I will have to look out for these for my nieces and nephews. It's always great to see a children's book with a strong female character in a "non-traditional" role.

Mailed on Friday via surface mail.

Recieved the book today! I'll start reading it as soon as I finish with the current book I'm working on :) Thanks Sqdancer!

Came in the mail today. The "runes" look very interesting! There was also an envelope for the author full of neat postcards, bookmarks, and even a calendar from Canada. (I'll have to read this soon and get it on the road so it can return before 2006.)

Bach's writing is superior -- very strong descriptive passages and plot. I will have to look for more of his writing, since this is only the second book of his that I've read.

These descriptions of food were especially wonderful:

"He lifted a platter of zucchini-lemon fettuccine in one paw, a bowl of Sicilian summer salad in the other..."

"...helped himself to golden spaghetti pie and Mediterranean wheat-berry rolls."

"...pouring high-mountain ice water"

"...her baked stuffed pear untouched, her fragant panforte barely nibbled despite its wondrous colors and spices."

The minute-by-minute rescue adventure and the glamorous reporter on the scene kept my interest high. The only reason I gave it 9 stars instead of 10 was that I'm a curmudgeonly mainstream-Protestant type and I've yet to read a New Age near-death scene that doesn't make me cringe. The one in this book reminded me of the guru's appearance near the beginning of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."

My only other quibble is -- I think having Bethany choose Vink for her boat was pure nepotism! (and look at the trouble he caused, too.)

Boa was my favorite character (although my favorite character names have got to be Dhimine and Mistinguette) so I hope he appears in some of the other four stories. There was a reference to him working at the Ranch!

Mailing to Yokae today. Thanks so much for organizing this ring!

I always knew that ferrets were special, now I have proof of their intelligence and bravery. This was an enchanting story with likable characters and a fun, fast pace.

I didn't completely dislike the near-death/rainbow bridge moment, but it seemed abrupt to me, totally unexpected. It jarred me from the 'reality' of the story for a moment, but perhaps that's how a near-death experience should be.

I enjoyed the growing friendship between Chloe and Bethany, and waited throughout to see Chloe's crush on Boa surface.

I thought the runes were fascinating, and hope to eventually have the entire set on hand to translate. Just the kind of puzzle I adore!

I do plan on reading the entire series, and sharing them with my daughters. Thank you for sharing this in a bookring; it was a joy to read. :)

Mailed 30 Sept to MartiP. Enjoy :)

Received in the mail as part of a bookring. I am looking forward to reading this as soon as I finish my current book. My four ferrets are very happy it came also - not because they read, but because they are currently taking turns crawling inside the bubble-wrap mailer, while those outside pounce the one in it. It is difficult not to smile when ferrets are in the room. :-)

Journal Entry 20 by MartiP on Wednesday, November 23, 2005
This is the second in this series that I've read, and it's slightly more engaging than Air Ferrets Aloft, IMHO. It's charming, and the characters loveable. I enjoyed Chloe the rockstar, and the scarf at the end was a nice touch. :-) I have heard that the illustrations are going away for the compiled volume, which I think is a shame - I like them.

Thank you for allowing me to participate. I plan to get it off in the mail to the next recipient this weekend.
