It's always tough ending off a series but the ending (of a kind) was just perfect... I'll now have to reread the first three books. Hamlet was a great character (and yes, I am aware someone else thought him up first!).

Let The ring begin! A global project indeed set by the lovely Miss Owl in the land of plenty..This is just the antidote for me, recently moved to New York from Liverpool, England and I needed a taste of home, my stay there last month was all too brief. This series is a wonderful diversion, I am already immersed, will not be too long until it is off to its next location...Really pleased to be reading this cheers miss owl for making it possible this will come back to you no time in obligatory boomerang fashion..good on ya shiela :)

Just finished this latest of Mister Fforde's Thursday Next series. I enjoyed this, which is a rarity for me to enjoy being that I am not in the least interested in sci-fi or detective fare. I loved how rife this was with its chock full of literary references, bon mots and foibles. The undercurrent of his references, move this book along Godspeed. What Mister Fforde has done here, is create an alternate world, one in which we can vicariously escape into, being the textured ironic landscape is very inviting. It is like falling into a Dali painting, but nonetheless quite the diversion. I have rated this piece in particular a 9, it is a near perfect read. I particularly am enjoying reading British writers at the moment, being I am desperately homesick, Liverpool is my home, New York is where I have come to get another opening , another show, but the more I think about it - I will return to the motherland. Well you didn't think thebowiefollies could end this on just one tangent!!Im a Libra :) Many cheers to my new droogie miss owl! for posting this to me, I really enjoyed my initiation into the bookring. Good on ya! This book will be posted tomorrow to the lovely and devestatingly talented fsr44, happy reads :) - V.

Received today. Must remember to include a For Sentimental Reasons postcard along with the lovely cards in it now when I send the book along. I have one book ahead of it, but then I'll read it and speed it on its way.

Journal Entry 6 by fsr44 from Pawtucket, Rhode Island USA on Sunday, October 30, 2005
I loved this one! Possibly the best of the series. At the risk of revealing myself to be a hopeless softie, I'll admit that the ending had me sniffling. I thought the twist at the end was brilliant, unexpected and very well done. A fitting end to a terrific, imaginative series.

I found this one to be highly entertaining and I enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing the book, Miss-Owl!

My humble apologies for holding up the book for so long - I got quite busy in during the holidays and didn't get a chance to read as much of it as I would have liked. It will be off to the next reader today!

BTW, does anyone have a recipe for Battenberg cake? I've never had it!

Journal Entry 11 by rhythmbiscuit from Northglenn, Colorado USA on Wednesday, January 18, 2006
I'm so glad this book arrived. I just finished The Well of Lost Plots the other day. I will read this book after I finish Three Weeks with My Brother, also a bookring.

Journal Entry 12 by rhythmbiscuit from Northglenn, Colorado USA on Tuesday, January 31, 2006
It took me a few chapters to get into this book, but then I loved it. I particularly enjoyed how Fforde weaved together some of the subplots he had introduced in previous books. My favorite characters were Hamlet and the Cat. I enjoyed the Cat's and Kaine's duel and I especially loved Hamlet's man-of-action antics at the Superhoop.

This book will go on to buffra as soon as I get her address.

I have it. I was out of town and it was waiting for me when I returned.

Will probably pass it on soon, as I don't know how long it was waiting. Poor little book.

Thanks for your patience. Sorry for the delay.

Journal Entry 17 by eicuthbertson from Burnaby, British Columbia Canada on Thursday, August 3, 2006
Excellent---very satisfying read...lots of action & so many surprises!

My favourite of the literary characters is Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, for sure. Hard working, serious & by the sounds of it, hard done by. What can that Mr be up to?

Journal Entry 18 by bilbi from Chambéry, Rhône-Alpes France on Wednesday, August 16, 2006
What a huge book ! I'm waiting for 3 or 4 bookrings to arrive at home. What will happen to my sanity if they're all that big ? OK. Just kidding ;-)
Thanks for sharing.
Happy summer to you all \o/

Journal Entry 19 by bilbi from Chambéry, Rhône-Alpes France on Sunday, August 20, 2006
I enjoy the book a little less than the others... maybe because it took place in real world ;-)
But what an imagination Fforde has : Hamlet, dodos, and so on...

Thanks for the book.

I seem to be the last. What should I do next ? <== I can't help writing this, sorry ;-o

I received this today. Perfect timing, as I just (as of a few minutes ago!) finished the Well of Lost Plots. I'm going to start this tonight. Thank you, Bilbi for sending it, and thank you, Miss-Owl for adding me.

This was very good, but the ending was a bit sad. Is this the final book in the series, then? What a shame, as I truly enjoyed them all!

Sent to ajsmom.

Thank you for sharing this with me.

Caught today, thanks!

Journal Entry 23 by ajsmom from Quesnel, British Columbia Canada on Monday, November 13, 2006
The fourth and final novel was action-packed! I have to admit skimming over the Superhoop croquet match a little, just as I skim over those sports bits in the Harry Potter books - sci-fi sports descriptions make my head spin.

I liked how Granny was a character we knew already (no spoilers here)and that Landen is such a modern dad. And Hamlet! What a great character, all fleshed out in modern fiction. Alas poor Yorrick indeed!

With Miss-Owl's permission, I am sending this book out on another ring, as I have bought books #2 and #3 in the series and have them travelling on a ring that was started by book #1 of Cinnamon-Girl's. I will update the ring listing here as book #1 makes its' way through the list and those people want (or not) to join the rings for #2 and #3. This book (#4) will be heading to tenneh this week, as I see book #2 has just been completed...

I picked up this book at the post office today from tenneh in NE ... as part of this Bookring.

c. 2004 -- 393 pages -- Trade Paperback - #67 on BookCrossing 2008 Favorites list (series)

Back Cover: There is another 1988. Where purgatory is a motorway service station. Where dodos are very much alive, living in your potting shed, and called Alan. And where the future of the universe hangs in the balance of a premier league croquet match ... Literary Detective Thursday Next is on a mission. And it's not just a mission to save the planet. It's a lot more complicated than that.

First, she has to get her job back following the infamous illegal cheese-smuggling incident. Then there's the small matter of persuading Hamlet to attend his conflict resolution classes, and making sure that President-for-Life George Formby doesn't lose his seat to a self-declared Dictator, the decidedly fictional Yorrick Kaine. Not to mention trying to force the evil Goliath Corporation to un-eradicate her husband, Landen Parke-Laine.

Will Thursday ever see Landen again? Is shopping the new religion? Who is cloning Shakespeare? Can she prevent Armageddon? And who will babysit her son while she does it? Welcome to the Next Dimension - where fiction is definitely very much stranger than truth.

Journal Entry 28 by ReadingGal79 from Antioch, Illinois USA on Friday, February 23, 2007
I finished reading this today. As the others, I love the adventures of Thursday Next in the fictional and real worlds. The ending was fantastic. I wondered how Fforde was going to wrap up the series. He did it in the best way beyond my imagination.

A fitting ending to an absolutely brilliant series, of which I've thoroughly enjoyed each and every installment! ('The Well of Lost Plots', however, remains my favorite)

I understand Mr. Fforde has another series in which his wonderful imagination is just as evident, so I will be sure to look for those, as well. Thanks so much for sharing these, ajsmom, and as I've just received purpleskybaby's addy, I will mail this along on my next PO run.

It's always a treat to read Fforde's books and this was no exception. It's like taking a holiday and I'm sooo glad there will be a sequel (!) in July. And yes, Hamlet was delighful with his conflict management classes. Could do with a few of them myself :)

The book is heading Next to Wales. I got TracyR's address and will mail the book today.

Got there in the end. Sorry for the confusion and delay.

It was wonderful and I'm so sad to have come to the end! Will there be more? Is there already and I don't know? The writing is witty, the plot twists and turns are nuts and I just love Thursday and crew.

Today I posted Something Rotten back to Australia, sadly by surface because £7+ was just too much for airmail, so I hope it doesn't take too long. Thank you, everybody, for making it available and keeping it travelling.

Journal Entry 42 by Miss-Owl on Monday, August 11, 2008
It's arrived on the slow boat from the UK :) Thanks to everyone participated in the ring & took it one step further until it got safely home.

Miss-Owl, incredibly generously, offered to donate this book to The Lost Book for a bookring. Unfortunately, delays caused by TheLostBook, not Miss-Owl, have meant that this hasn't worked out. Thanks, Miss-Owl, for the offer, and sorry that things didn't go to plan.

Another copy of Something Rotten is being used for the bookray, so if you'd like to follow its travels or join the ray, take a look at the JEs for that copy.
