This is a true Man-Against-the-World story. It's not King's best, but like most of his work, it will quickly pull you in. You'll find yourself indentifying with the protagonist, and wondering what you'd do in such a situation. It has the same vibe as King's other "Bachman" tales, which is to say it's not as rich as some of King's non-Bachman books, but is edgier.
