Journal Entry 4 by cats-eye from Bishop Auckland, County Durham United Kingdom on Friday, February 10, 2006
As much as I enjoyed the first book, I found this one a bit slow moving and disjointed. At times I needed to check the previous page number to see if a page had been left out, but it was always the story shifting abruptly, not a faulty book! It looks as if Gabaldon wrote this in "chunks", rather than in one continuous flow. The story itself was detailed and historically interesting, although I found there were far more minor characters to keep track of in this one. I'm glad I read this, however, as this one is an important piece to the story, and I've heard really good things about book 3! Thank you for sharing this one, gailcm - I posted it out today (via first class) to Vespa :-)

Journal Entry 6 by Vespa from Weymouth, Dorset United Kingdom on Monday, February 27, 2006
I really enjoyed catching up with the characters from this series, although I found the first part a little confusing as we had left Claire in eighteenth century Scotland and suddenly she was back in the twentieth century with no explanation until part way through the book. I've got AnglersRest's address so I will get it in the post to her today

What a brilliant book? I've enjoyed seeing the characters develop, although there were extras in the Eighteenth Century that I had to keep track of. A great book, and my only regret is that I didn't start reading the series earlier! I have CatrionaMoore's address, so the book will be in the post on Monday 20th.

I picked this one up from the sorting office last night and started it this morning. Was I really going to leave James Fraser lounging about on my bookshelf?

Journal Entry 10 by catrionamoore from Ellistown, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Wednesday, April 12, 2006
Admittedly it has been a couple of weeks since I finished this book so my comments aren’t quite as fresh as they could have been. My eldest had tonsillitis, my youngest caught chicken pox, and then my eldest came down with chicken pox too, so with missing almost 4 weeks of work and university, I’m desperately playing catch-up. Again, I enjoyed the book even if I did have a few “Oh please” moments where even my suspended belief was stretched a little too far. I cannot deny that Diana Gabaldon writes a very appealing leading man, ‘So in July of 1997 seven of us in a totally hosed way declared our pledge of undying love for one James Alexander Malcolm Mackenzie Fraser and the Ladies of Lallybroch™ was born.’ I have to say that the inspiration for Jamie was a bit of a disappointment for me, perhaps because I was brought up on a diet of Emmerdale Farm and visits to the panto where a certain actor often played the hapless male character. I haven’t mentioned his name in case people don’t want it spoiling for them too. I am looking forward to the next book and was rather chuffed that I noted another one in the series, A Breath of Snow and Ashes. Apologies if it is already in the spiral and I’m telling you something you already know.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, although I hadn't expected to find Claire back in the present day and to begin with I thought maybe I had missed out a book. I can't wait to read book 3 and find out if Claire goes back and takes Brianna with her. I have contacted Morpha and as soon as I get her address wil get this off to the USA.

Came in the mail today. I think this is the 3rd or 4th book in the series when I was expecting the second. Oh well, I'll read it anyway. Thanks teachie!

OK, I found this book to by initially confusing. And I agree that at times, it seemed slow. I believe that a directly chronological approach would have been more effective. At the beginnig of the book, I didn't need to know events from Claire's return to the 20th century. Perhaps the author or editor thought that begining the book in the 1960's with Claire and her adult daughter would make the end of the book more palatable, and keep the reader's interest strong enough to purchace the next installment in the series. In any case, I enjoyed this story, and while it is not the strongest book in the series, it is still a good one. Looking forward to more.

Thank you for spiralling these books gailcm. I have to say that this isn't the best book I have read recently, but is still an intriguing, if somewhat confusing, story, although I think I've got everyone straight in my head now. I understand that book 3 is better, so I'll start reading that in the next few days as its been with me for a while. I've PM'd candy-is-dandy and will send the book off when I get the address.

Naughty Naughty Candy!! I have had this book for bloomin' ages. I have tried to read it a couple of times but just can't cope with it's size so am finally admitting defeat. I used to be able to read big books but haven't the stamina any more. Thanks for letting me try this, gailcm, but please remove me from the rest of the spiral. I am sending it on to valer1e who is now versavisa.

Journal Entry 24 by Versavisa from Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire United Kingdom on Friday, April 18, 2008
Just finished it! I enjoyed this more than the previous book. The present days sections I found tedious and the historical ones more believable. To be expected I suppose, as I live in the present. Well written and it kept me hooked from start to finish. I've had no response to my request for heathwitch's address but I'll try again today. Thanks gailcm for organising and sharing your book.
