Anne Tyler is one of my favorite authors, so I couldn't resist picking this brand-new copy up at a flea market for less than a dollar.

The opening line...

Once upon a time, there was a woman who discovered she had turned into the wrong person.

And so begins the story of a 53 year old grandma who wondered if it "might be possible, after all, to return to that place where her life had forked and choose the other branch now?"

This was an interesting book. The thing I like about Tyler is, her character development is so intricate. I always feel like her characters and her stories are real. Because, they can be. This was about a woman who, in her 50’s, questions the path she chose in life. She married Joe Davitch who was divorced with 3 girls. They are married 6 years and he dies. After all of those years after his death, she raises his girls, continues to run his business and has Joe’s Uncle (Poppy) living with her. (He is 99 years old.) She starts to think what her life would have been if she married her boyfriend, Will, who she dumped to marry Joe. She has never felt she was actually part of the Davitch family. Just a fixture they have grown accustomed to. So, she looks Will up. And the story takes off from there. I have yet to read a Tyler I didn’t like. This one is no exception.

Will drop in the mail tomorrow to Solitary1.

This is my favorite Anne Tyler book (so far, anyway). It took me a while to get into it but then the main character grew on me. I'm sending it along today to azuke in Florida who is next in the bookring.

Just arrived, thanks solitary1 .
Wow you guys all speed through this book in a few days. Guess that means it's really enjoyable. Unfortunately I have two bookrings ahead so it will take slightly longer here. Will finish asap.

This was such an enjoyable and easy read that I, with some guilt, finished it before the other bookrings I received earlier. Like solitary1 I had a slow start. The mob of characters almost gave me a Demophobia. But when the book ends, I feel somewhat sad, like I was asked to leave a party when I just got to know everybody and was having a good time, and wanted to share more in their lives.

Mamikaem just pm'ed her address so this book should be on its way soon.

I received this in today's mail. Thanks to everyone before me who passed it along! Anne Tyler is one of my new favorite authors, so I will read this as soon as I can.

UPDATE: 11/10/06 - I'm just starting this today due to being behind on my bookrings/rays. My apologies for being so slow. Hopefully it will be a quick read as Anne Tyler's books usually are.

What a wonderful story! Like Anne Tyler's other books, this one did not disappoint. I grew wonderfully attached to the characters. It left me with a warm, fuzzy feeling at the end! This will go out to laurarn in the morning (weather permitting--we're having our first big winter storm--I LOVE IT!!)

Mailed 12/01/06.
