I finished the book last night. Sorry to say that but I think this was one of the worst books I have read this year. The plot was badly constructed,the characters dull and uninteresting,the ending was awful.Far worse than "The Pilot`s Wife" and "The Last Time They Met". I had the feeling that the author simply needed to publish another book, and she just threw a rough sketch.
Sorry I sound so critical...the choice was good,nikel27, as I like Anita Shreve`s books, but obviously this one was not among her best. It happens....

This is the first time I have tried to read an Anita Shreve book. I got to about 100 pages, and realised I didn't really want to finish it.

3 December 05: It was hard to get into this book - it took me more than 30 pages to finally understand which are the characters and what are they supposed to be doing:) My favorite bit were the letters Sian and Charles wrote to each other and I also enjoyed the pages which presented their days at the summer camp when they were 14. As in the case of "The Pilot's Wife" the rythm of the book accelerated at the end (I must confess the end was a little bit disappointing). All in all, not the best book I have read this year but a good choice for the "surprise rings" as Anita Shreve is a talented writer.
