Excellent story about a woman charged with murder in the early 1900's. Did she do it? This book is a journey of one of the doctors sent to find out what happened, exactly.

So excited to read my first Margaret Atwood! Will start it tonight!
Hello All!
Just want to let you know that I am still working on this book and it is not "stalled"! I know I'm over my 4 week limit but I am enjoying it!
I will make an effort to increase my reading speed--my apologies for the hold-up!

Alrighty--finally finished! Will get next BXers address and send along.
As for the book, it wasn't a "page-turner" so I wasn't sucked in, an it went a little slowly at times, but I still found it an enjoyable read. I'm not sure what exactly I'm supposed to get out of it. Learning some about the time period and class differentiation then and understanding the mystique of 'woman' as well as the treatment of lunatics and prisoners was all very interesting. It was very well-written though and it was also interesting to observe the baser nature of some of the characters. I would definitely read another Atwood.

Received in the mail just in time for a long trip to London so should get through a fair bit in the next week, it is pretty heavy looking! Thanks Lauraloo and Skizeye for my next Margaret Atwood book, I have been wanting to read this one for awhile!

Took quite awhile to get through and didn't draw me into the story at any point. As often happens with so much hype, it didn't live up to my high expectations. However, another well-written book from my favourite author - just wouldn't consider it one of my favourite books.

This took its time getting here! Received it in the mail yesterday. Thanks for sharing and sending the book. I will try to start reading it soon!
Edit Dec. 31: it is taking me a bit longer to read this book. I find it quite interesting, but due to a busy working schedule, I have only read a third up to now. Hope to catch up again over the next few days.

Like other readers, it took me quite a while to get through this book. I had no idea what the story was about and it took some time before I started to enjoy it. What I like most about this book, like skiezey9, are the descriptions of the time period and landscape. I also found the ideas about psyche of women interesting. In those days they really thought of women as the weaker ones!
I have stubee's addres and will be mailing the book today!

My first Atwood novel, it's a historial fiction based on real life events and I must say I found this to be an interesting read. I enjoyed reading Grace's story and how her life and the tragic events that took place in 1843 effected those around her.
I'll be passing this on to KT-J shortly.
Thanks Lauraloo29 for helping me in crossing of another of the 1001 Books YMRBYD.
Next Up: Peter Ackroyd – The Lambs of London

Received from Stubee, thanks very much! I've got two books to finish (both of which I've only got one chapter left to read!) then I'll get onto this.
I enjoyed this book although I found it a bit slow to get into. I'd read a few chapters and Stubee asked me where I was up to but I couldn't tell him as nothing seemed to have happened! It did get going more after that though.
As others have said, I wasn't sure what I was supposed to get from the book really, it was a recounting of a story but seemed to leave a lot of loose ends. However, it was a very interesting look at the period and the role and status of women.
Not an outstanding book but I do like Margaret Atwood's writing so I'll definitely be reading more of her work in future.
Thanks lauraloo29 for another good read (and another 1001 book)! I have synical's address so will be posting this off soon.
Edit 2/3/09: This was posted today.
