Susan Calvin, has-been soap star, and John L. Johnson, producer without success, meet one day at lunchtime at the ivy. They go out for a walk, but will they meet again? And why are they here where they are.

Douglas Coupland has written a nice book it's not that confusing or weird as some of the comments on the back say.

very curious...

(Might take a while to read, though...)

one rainy cold weekend helps a lot with Mount TBR...

I absolutely loved this book, The two characters, their stories, how they slowly unfold...
and although there were many flashbacks, the reader always knows where he is and who is who.

Great book and fun to read. Great language, too.

This looks like a great read. I am about to go on holiday for two weeks, so I will take it with me and read it while I am away.

I won't be able to journal it again until I come back, as I will not have any computer access.

But as soon as I get back (hopefully having finished reading the book), I will make a new journal entry and send it on to the next reader.

Thanks very much for letting me join this ring.

Arrived back from holiday today, having read this while I was away.

I'll make a full journal entry in the next couple of days when I've got more time, and then I'll send the book on its way.

This reminded me a heck of a lot of Carl Hiaasen, who I think is one of the best novellists currently writing. The blend of love story and satire was spot-on, and I was never confused by the jumps in time.
Susan and John were both oddballs in their own way, but it was their flaws and their acknowledgement of them which made them come to life as characters.
I was really rooting for them to get together - but I won't spoil it by saying whether or not they do.

This is now on its way to hunnyb.

Received this today, thanks! I really loved Coupland's "All Families are Psychotic" so am looking forward to reading this one. It's a rainy day so I can get into it right away :)

Finished this today - it was really great fun! Coupland is a really imaginative writer with a great wit and flair. How's this for a description: "the sun treacled through the blinds." Must say the pace got a bit too hectic for me at times and the characters a bit one-dimensional, but even so it was a good read. Thanks for sharing this mihi, I'll send it off to Cable as soon as I get their address.

Journal Entry 11 by Cable from Carlisle, Cumbria United Kingdom on Tuesday, October 11, 2005
This arrived in the post this morning while I was actually on the computer so i've been able to make my entry straight away. I've almost finished the book i'm currently reading so this will be next on the list.

Finally got this book read and, as with Douglas Couplands other books, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope everybody else enjoys it as much as I did.

To me Douglas Coupland is one of the few authors who can really capture the modern american way of life, and all its flaws, in his writtings, this one is another perfect example of that.
It was a very enjoyable reading and probably the most cinematic book I've read by Coupland, with all it's flashbacks and flashforwards.
The subject of the book is very interesting and we can all remember some soap opera stars that have vanished into oblivion or turned into X rated movie stars, Hollywood feeds on its children like an angry god.
Read it while listening to The Lords Of The New Church and it felt great.
On its way downunder (15.12.2005).

Received this on Christmas Eve, will read it shortly and send it onwards without too much delay.

This was a really enjoyable read. The characters were interesting, and I liked the way the story unfolded. I too was hoping the characters would get together in the end - my lips are sealed!

Will be sending it on to Jubby very soon.

Received in the post today. Thank you.

Thank you very much for sharing this with me Mihi.
I really enjoyed reading it. I read it on a plane flight, and thought I would be able to PM the next person (andrea1982) and post it onto them, and journal too.

But the destination of the flight was Lord Howe Island off the coast of New South Wales, and the only internet terminal I could find on the island was in the local museum and was a dial-up!!!

So, that is why I am so slow with this one - honest!

Coupland writes the most intriguing novels. Well, I've only read one other of his (another bookring 'All families are psychotic'). His characters are so dirty and raunchy, that you just don't think (initially) that you could relate to them.

Yet, they are all human and with simple needs under it all.

But I love the child beauty pagent angle. And I am interested with all the Australian references. I'll have to google to find out more!

Attempting to contact andrea1982 now.

Thank you.
