This book has confirmed what I have suspected since reading two of the later books in series - I prefer the early Phryne Fisher books!!! I think because Phyrne is more curious and finds men more tempting than in the later books when she has a full time companion.

I think the idea of "Candida" (know that sounds like a yeast infection!!) came from the famous Graham Thorne kidnapping in Australia. His parents won $100,000 in one of the first Opera House Lotteries. It is also quite similar to the famous American "Lindbergh" (a famous pilot, just like the father in this story) and the "Peugeot" (teh car manufacturer) kidnappings, except neither party had trusty ol' Phyrne at their disposal, and therefore either paid the ransom or lost their child. In one of the later books in the series, Phryne's lovers ear is sent to her - just like in the John Paul Getty III kidnapping case.

MMM....sounds to me like Kerry Greenwood likes to recycle ideas a little - or is she just cleverly inserting these similarities so readers like me can brush up on their history?

Ill send out to Buggyhare as soon as I receive her details. Thanks for the the books Mistlerose

One of two Phryne Fisher bookrings I received today... I have a few other books to read first, but since these are so short I might be able to bump them up a bit! Thanks Funkybamboozle for sending it to me, and Mistlerose for organising the ring!

Journal Entry 7 by buggyhare from Brisbane, Queensland Australia on Tuesday, October 11, 2005
Well, I didn't quite get to bumping this one up my TBR pile - sorry for holding up the ring! Anyway, I finally got to it, and really enjoyed it! I've read a few other Phryne books, and I think this is the best I've read so far (although I haven't gotten to Murder in Montparnasse yet - the one pinkozcat claims is the best)! Funkybamboozle, you know more about history than I do - I just thought it was a good story! But as Oscar Wilde said, "talent borrows, genius steals"! I'll send it off to Lisagt as soon as I have an address. Thanks for the ring Mistlerose!

Wouldn't you know it - 3 bookrings (yes 3!!) collected from the mail box today! I already have 2 others ahead, so will get to this gem ASAP.
This is the 2nd Phryne book - in the series, my 7th I think! - so now can see how the story continues after Cocaine Blues.

Journal Entry 13 by Littlemave from Weston, Australian Capital Territory Australia on Friday, December 2, 2005
Dont panic anyone! I started this today, so it will be moving again soon.

How does the Hon Phryne Fisher remain so calm and collected all the time and *always* knows exactly what to do and say to anyone from cooks and housemaids up to Detective Inspectors!?
This is one of the smallest books of her adventures I have read so far, it seemed to finish too fast. :(
And there is -no- way you will get *me* walking on the wing of a Gypsy Moth 'bus...
But it was very nice to know how she got Mr & Mrs B working for her, only I didnt understand the significance of her address: 221B. Phryne told Bunji she only bought it for the number and added the 'B' herself - any one any ideas?

I have contacted gypsyrose02 and will send on ASAP.

Arrived safely today. Looking forward to reading it. Phryne is always fun.

I actually think I enjoyed this one more than the first. It may be a case of me getting used to Kerry Greenwood's writing, but I do think this book flowed much better. The first book seemed a bit jumpy to me with some scenes barely touched on.
Lots of fun with Phyrne racing around the countryside. But the big question is, why the heck haven't they made a television series of all these books?
Thanks so much gypsyrose02 for posting it to me and thanks Mistlerose for organising the ring. Let me know your address and I'll post it back to you.

Journal Entry 20 by Mistlerose from Frankston, Victoria Australia on Monday, February 13, 2006

Big "D'oh!"

Viz-a-vi my comment regarding 221B - Phryne's street address. I just was flicking tv and caught one of those Brainiest ... quizes with Sandra Sully and the question "Who lived at 221B Baker Street?"
Well Sherlock Holmes of course.

Well that is some trivia I will never forget now!
