First book of the Temperance Brennen seris and hard to put down. What a great read.
A superb new writer introduces her intrepid heroine to crime fiction. Dr. Tempe Brennan, a trowel-packing forensic anthropologist from North Carolina, works in Montreal's Laboratoire de Medecine Legale examining recovered bodies to help police solve missing-persons cases and murders. It's clear to Tempe that the remains of several women killed and savagely mutilated point to a sadistic serial killer, but she can't convince the police. Determined to prevent more brutal deaths, she sleuths solo, tracking her quarry through Montreal's seedy underworld of hookers, where her anthropologist friend Gabby, doing her own scary research, is being stalked by a creep. Despite her ability to work among fetid, putrefying smells that "leap out and grab" and her "go-to-hell attitude" with seasoned cops, Tempe is as vulnerable as a soft Carolina morning. When a grinning skull is planted in her garden, her investigation turns personal and escalates to an intense and satisfying conclusion. Except for imparting an excess of lab information, Reichs, also a forensic anthropologist, drives the pace at a heady clip. A first-class writer, she dazzles readers with sensory imagery that is apt, fresh, and funny (e.g., "fingers felt cold and limp, like carrots kept too long in a cooler bin"). Recommended for all fiction collections, this read is sure to be in demand.

Off to gembear in the UK
Thanks for my lovely surprise post Lady Janet and timely it was too because I'd just finished Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and was looking for another read. I'll be into it right away because today is my rest day - nothing but reading and stitching for me!
Thoroughly enjoyed the book. It hasn't taken me this long to read it, just to get myself logged on to BC and then to get the journal page to open up. Is it just me or is the site playing up? It was a great story that had me on the edge of my seat. After the disappointing end to Harry Potter I'd have to say that the gripping ending left me far more satisfied too.

Picked up at the Salcey Forest BCUK meet today. I've not read any Kathy Reichs yet, so thanks, gembear, I'm looking forward to discovering a new author.

I found this very compulsive reading and it kept me gripped right until the end. The characterisations were well done and really sprang off the page. However, the writer used her own professional forensic knowledge in such great detail that I found some of the scenes a bit too graphic for comfort.
I'll take this to the UnConvention in Birmingham on 1 July, to pass on to a fellow Book Crosser, or for wild release on the day.

Finally pulled from the box of Unconvention gatherings> I was interested in the 'Bones' TV series connections, which were not particularly outstanding.
An excellent first novel, while comporisons to Patricia Cornwell abound, I found the differences to be more enjoyable.
