"Wrongfully convicted and imprisoned for sexual assault on one of his students, Jack St Bride arrives in Salem Falls determined to rebuild his life. He takes a job washing dishes at Addie Peabody's diner and slowly starts to form a relationship with her in the quiet new England village ... but the rest of the inhabitants remain suspicious of the stranger.

Just when Jack thinks he has outrun his past, a quartet of teenage girls with a secret turns his world upside-down once again, triggering a modern-day witch hunt in a town haunted by its own history."

This book is about hypocrisy.

The townspeople of Salem Falls acted quite understandably in the circumstances but It doesn't excuse the level of violence, particularly in view of the secrets which some of the citizens were concealing.

I found the tension so great that I stopped reading this book when I was halfway through and read the last few chapters; only then could I finish it.

Like Jodi Picoult's other books, it is well written and covers a very controversial subject - one which we would probably prefer not to think about. It also becomes a rather damming indicement of the American justice system. I am not sure if plea bargaining is a part of the Australian Legal System - I hope not for the sake of the innocent people who are wrongly accused of a crime.

I have only given this book a rating of seven due to the discomfort I experienced when I read it but that doesn't mean that it is not an excellent book; I shall offer it as a bookring.

I have started a bookring with this book.

The book weights in at about 400 grammes and therefore the cheapest way to send it is going to be one of those bags which costs a flat rate for 'up to 500gms'. For that reason I have not taken states of residence into account when compiling the list of participants.

I knew this would happen - I'm currently in the middle of another ring, and this was one of two that arrived today! Still, now that uni's started again, I expect I'll want to procrastinate and so shouldn't have it for too long - especially since it looks like such an interesting read! Thanks pinkozcat!

I can see why Jodi Picoult is a bestselling author! This book was an interesting and engaging read, with lots of twists and cliffhangers, and all the loose ends were tied up by the end. Quite enjoyable, I look forward to reading more of her books. Thanks for organising the ring pinkozcat! I have tantan's address so will post it to her this afternoon.

Received in the mail today. It's a few down on the pile, but I'll get to it as soon as I can.

Journal Entry 8 by tantan from Melbourne CBD, Victoria Australia on Tuesday, October 4, 2005
I finished this today, and like all the other Jodi Picoult's I've read so far I could hardly put it down. It was another controversial topic handled so well, although I did feel that the ending was quite as powerful as the other two that I've read - Plain Truth and My Sister's Keeper.

Thanks to pinkozcat for sharing. This will be heading off to fushmush soon.

yay! I LOVE Jodi Picoult. I might bump this one up the TBR pile. Thanks for sharing.

I didn't think this was Picoult's best novel but it was still a compelling read.

I'm feeling ambivalent about the story line. Can a man be wrongly accused of sexual assualt twice? Are teenage girls that manipulative and uncaring? The twist at the end is interesting but I think Picoult tries to use it as a bandaid to unanswered questions.

Posting to Flitterby today.

What an excellent start to a rainy Saturday! I had just woke up and was listening to the sound of the soft rain when I heard a knock on our front door. I lifted the blinds to see who it was and a lady said 'postal delivery' and waved a 500g red postal bag. I quickly hobbled to the door and thanked her for the delivery and took the bag back to bed with me. All snuggled up, I opened the parcel to find this book! I told my other half I was going to go get a cup of tea and he commented he was getting up, so I managed to talk him into making my tea so I could stay snuggled in and have a read. What a treat!

I do have a few other books on my immediate TBR pile, but I've this one has priority being a bookring book. I've already started it!

Wow, what an uncomfortable story, but very well written. It packs quite a punch.

I will PM EnchantedWoods for her address and try to get this into the mail by the end of the week.

Thanks so much for offering this book as a bookring.

EnchantedWoods has asked to be put at the bottom of the list for this book, so I've sent amberC a PM to ask for her address.

I agree with fushmush, this is not Jodi Picoult's best and it also seems highly improbable that Jack could have gotten wrongly accused of sexual assualt twice, in the space of two years. The Wiccan part of the storyline was very interesting to me but I wished it was explored more, which could have helped to flesh out the story better. I also anticipated the ending (spoiler: hidden) - when Gillian was thinking about killing her father and did drop pills in his drink, I thought that maybe he had sexually abused her. That's what happens when you watch too much Law and Order: SVU! As such, the ending didn't have a huge impact for me and I thought it actually raised a lot of other questions, which were not addressed in the novel. Definitely an interesting and controversial topic but I felt it was not executed properly. Still, it wasn't a horrible read and would still be one enjoyed by Jodi Picoult's fans.

I'm just waiting for kalasue's mailing address and will pass it on shortly. Thanks pinkozcat for sharing!

Like several others I think I've read too many Jodi Picoult books in too short a time, but I enjoyed this one right up until the end - I didn't like the final sentence! There were issues left unexplored, and I wanted to know what happened between the other girls...

Thanks pinkozcat for the ring, and leeny37 for the romantic attempt to get the book to me on Valentine's Day - as I live in WA Australia Post didn't quite manage the overnight thing, and I'm glad we don't have a relationship going on because this book could hardly be considered romantic. Though on second thoughts there were a couple of happy couples by the end...

Thanks for the opportunity pinkozcat, but I don't have the time to read this book now. I've started back at Uni and the assignments & readings are to full on to read anything else!! *shock horror* So this book is on it's way back to you (just in case someone else wants it).

I'll buy my own copy and read it 'one day'...
