The Back of the Book
Transplanted to Europe from her native America, Isabel Archer has candour, beauty, intelligence, an independent spirit and a marked enthusiasm for life. An unexpected inheritance apparently gives her freedom, but despite all her natural advantages she makes one disastrous error of judgement and the result is genuinely tragic. Her tale, told with James' inimitable poise, is on of the widest relevance.

Received this one...it may take a while to get to it, but I will keep you updated. Thanks!
I finally finished this. It took me quite a while to get into James' style, but once I did, I loved it. It is not a book I could read quickly; I really had to spend some time digesting the characters' personalities, actions, etc. I found myself wondering just what it was about Isabel Archer that made others so profoundly love or hate her. If I had figured that out, I might've given it ten stars. It's possible that it's there, and that I'm just too dense to see it, though.
At any rate, wonderful read. Glad I stuck with it. Off to Amanida as soon as I get an addy. Next up - The Mill on the Floss.

Arrived today, thanks irishajo & Laura. Hope to start it soon.
It took me an awfully long time to read this too - about 3 weeks! However, it was well worth it and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I'm still not 100% sure that I got all the nuances of the characters, but they were cleverly drawn and it was interesting to try to puzzle out their motivations.
I'm glad that I skipped the Introduction & Preface and dived straight into the book - reading the Introduction beforehand would completely spoil the
suspense of the story.
Just for the record, the book travelled with me to Spain, France and Wales.
Thanks for the ring Laura, I'll post ot back to you tomorrow.
