Juhuuuuu!

I got my first bookring-book! Thank you nice-cup-of-tea. I am looking forward to "watch the English" - especially with a nice cup of tea next to me (Thanks for that too!)!

So far I am enjoying the book. I'm sorry that it's taking me so long. It's not a book which I can just read in one go - the language is sometimes not so easy... but that's one of the things I really like about it. Soooo many (typically) English expressions that are new to me - I can't just "overread" them.
I promise to have it finished by Aug. 11th (the next Zurich meet-up) when I will pass it on to sun-beetle.

Journal Entry 5 by flying-bat from Baden, Aargau Switzerland on Tuesday, August 9, 2005
I have finally managed to finish the book! (It took me longer than expected.) During this time, it came with me to lots of nice places... up to a mountain hut in the Engadin on 3100 m altitude where it spent a night (with me), to the Tichino, where it could watch me scuba dive... and then variouse train an tram rides... You see, it's not that I didn't like reading the book but it isn't a book that I could read fast.
However, the more I had read, the better I could understand everything and the faster I got. The book not only tought me about English culture but also English language! And, surprisingly, many things sounded very familiar to me... are we Swiss maybe a little bit like the English? Or are some things that are discribed in the book not English, but universal...

BTW: my favourite word from the book: Eeyorish (I'm sorry, but I think it's dinky!)

I will now pass this book on to sun-beetle! Enjoy!

I'm already VERY curious about this book. So many people wanted to be in this ring, that it became three of them and flying-bat promised me that the English used in the book will be a challenge. Thanks for the tea!

an amusing, interesting and very true study of Englishness. I liked to pick through this book and read small bits and pieces out of it, it was too long and repeating to read the whole thing through.
I would love to have such a book about Swissness though :@)

continues it's travel tomorrow
enjoy!

Received it sound and safe! Thanks sun-beetle.

I was surprised to discover all these codes behind english behaviour.
I agree with sun-beetle that at times it was long and repeating. It is indeed better to pick through the book.
Now it is on it's way to polly-w.

Journal Entry 10 by polly-w from Nürnberg, Bayern Germany on Tuesday, October 11, 2005
The book arrived safely last week when I was on holidays. I am looking forward to reading it and will do so very soon. Thanks very much for sending it along such a long way... and for the tea.... hmmmm.....

Journal Entry 11 by polly-w from Nürnberg, Bayern Germany on Monday, October 31, 2005
Actually, up to now I have read hardly half of the book but as other bookrings are already on their way to me and as I like the book so much, I have decided to buy it for myself and send it on and then finish it more relaxed...
It is so funny and entertaining, sometimes it reminds me of Bill Bryson's Notes on a Small Island eventhough there is a different point of view. I very much like the mixture of "scientific" and "comedy approach"!

Seacloud47 does not want the book at the moment, so I have asked blaisezabini12 for her address and will send it to Romania within the next days, as soon as my own copy arrives.

Thank you very much for this wonderful bookring!!!

Edit Nov5th: Will finally be sent to Romania tomorrow!

Picked up yesterday from the post office. I have some rings/rays ahead of it but I'm sure I'll get to it soon - by the way, it looks lovely. Thank you Helen for organising the ring and thank you Polly for the nice postcard!

27 December 05 - I'm currently at page 165 and I really love this book. I've only started reading it two days ago because I have travelled a lot in the last 2 weeks (and I don't like to take bookrings/rays with me in case I lose the books...).
Until now I've enjoyed the most the 'queing' and the 'pub tipping' customs:)

31 December 05: it's great that the last book of 2005 was a good one! I especially liked the way in which the author manages to involve the reader in her research - the conclusion bits at the end of chapters were really helpful. All I can wish for at the moment is to be able to travel to UK in order to 'test' the conclusions of the author.
I have pmed the next reader on the list for the address.
Happy New Year to everyone!

4 January 06: mailed today!

Bad News :-( The books seems to have got lost in the postal system between Romania and Greece. If anyone finds a spare copy, could you let me know? Having already bought 3 copies of this book, I'd prefer to find a cheaper version *he he*

The wonderful Shadie has donated this book so that my lost bookring can continue! Thanks also to blaisezabini12 for finding the replacement copy :-)
