Journal Entry 2 by debnance from Alvin, Texas USA on Saturday, June 25, 2005
It's got to be tough to have written a wonderful, best-selling book. Think of the anxiety you feel. How will you ever do that again? Kidd seems to have tried. Hard. But she's not very good at hiding it; the book feels like a quilt she's stitched together of little pieces of everything that worked in Secret Life: mythology and friendships and the outdoors. But I kept seeing all her little pencil marks where she planned to sew everything together and she wasn't that good at erasing them and lots of places the little pieces of fabric didn't really fit together very well. But she tried. Hard.

Maybe it's just me (I have been unusually weepy lately) but this book was very good, and I was weeping, no, sobbing, at the end. Caveat: this may just be a function of the state of my life in general lately. I liked this book very much.

Pretty good but I liked Kidd's other book Secret Life of Bees better. I got a good cry out of this one and liked the storyline...although the mermaid chair theme was sort of far fetched to me!!!

I can't believe I didn't log this book - I'm sorry, Lisa. I enjoyed the writing but agree - not as good as bees. Saw the made for TV movie and didn't like that version at all. Still, glad I picked this one up to read. Will pass this one along...

Journal Entry 14 by Infantrywife101 from Jackson, New Jersey USA on Sunday, August 12, 2007
I got this book as a RABCK from someone, as it was on my wishlist from a really long time ago. To be honest, I don''t even remember why it was that I originally wanted to read it. I found myself getting completely lost in this book-in the good way! When I was not reading it, I felt as though I was missing a good part in a movie, and I wanted to get back to it as fast as I could. The story was easy to follow, and for women who have been married for more than 10 years, (I have only been married 7), I imagine that they might have felt a lot of what the main character in this book was feeling. My mother died last year, and I had a lot of inner demons that I have been dealing with due to her loss, and this book brought out some of that as well, being that the main character, too, suffers a loss. I loved picturing the island on which this story takes place...that was probably my most favorite part. You could almost smell the sea as Jessie walks along the beach. Truly a good read, and for whatever reason that I originally had it on my wishlist-I am glad I put it there!
