This is a wonderful, crazy book. Though the movie was pretty good, (and Chablis steals the show!) as usual the book is better.
"Genteel society ladies who compare notes on their husbands' suicides. A hilariously foul-mouthed black drag queen. A voodoo priestess who works her roots in the graveyard at midnight. A morose inventor who owns a bottle of poison powerful enough to kill everyone in town. A prominent antiques dealer who hangs a Nazi flag from his window to disrupt the shooting of a movie. And a redneck gigolo whose conquests describe him as a 'walking streak of sex.'
"These are some of the real residents of Savannah, Georgia, a city whose eccentric mores are unerringly observed--and whose dirty linen is gleefully aired--in this utterly irresistable book. At once a true-crime murder story and a hugely entertaining and deliciously perverse travelogue, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is as bracing and intoxicating as half-a-dozen mint juleps."

Received today. Have a couple things to finish up, and then will get started. Thank you!
Thoroughly enjoyed this book! The most amazing thing is that it is nonfiction, and that the story and all the people are real. It reads like wonderful fiction, well-written, engrossing, and a whole lot of fun. My favorite scene (if I had to pick one) involves Chablis the drag queen crashing the debutante ball in her shoplifted evening gown. "I am serious, chile."
Thank you for letting me read this!
I'll be sending it off to wolfprincess shortly.

I am sorry I caught the book back around the 12th of October. Things have been very crazy for me. I have been out on trainings for work and have not been home much and when I have been I have not been able to remember what I have checked in on line or not. I thought I got this one already checked in. I am reading this now.
This was a good read. I enjoyed the whole book and I can not pick one favirot part or person from the book. If I had to it would have to tie between the Voodoo Priestess and the Drag Queen during the ball. This is one book that I would like to hear on auto book I think it will be a good one to listen to and to get into.
I will be mailing the book out to morescode by Saturday 11/12/05

This book arrived today. I hope to get it back on the road on Saturday.
True crime that reads like a novel.
This is an engaging book that just oozes with the essence of Savannah.
The back of the book has a quote from the NY Times Book Review that perfectly sums it up: "Elegant and wicked.... Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil might be the first true-crime book that makes the reader want to book a bed and breakfast for an extended weekend at the scene of the crime."
I'll be sending this off to Piper79 on Saturday.

Picked up at the post office today. Thanks!
I finished this book this morning. This book started a little slow, but got rolling after the trial. I had no clue that this book was non-fiction until about halfway through. Quite an amazing group of people in a fantastic city.
I'm sending this book to airyaa this week.

Read at last. The funny thing was that I didn't know all the stories in the book had really happened... figured this out when I had gone through half of the book. Then, completely amazed, I kept reading and the book became much more interesting.

Arrived last week... thanks for sharing airyaa and for the cute bookmark! I should be able to start this book tomorrow. :-)
I finished this book tonight, it took me a bit longer than expected. I found it a bit hard to get into in the beginning... but after a little while, when you get to know the characters, it starts to get interesting. Somehow it's hard to believe that this is a non-fiction book, it sure doesn't feel like one. But it was a good entertaining read. :-)
I'll be sending this off to mickey81 in Italy tomorrow.

I have the new book! The ray is alive! Many thanks to all involved...
Many many thanks to airyaa, matlockjames and glade1. This has been my best read of the year so far. I loved it. The style and content just gripped me from the start and carried me along - I particularly enjoyed Lady Chablis and squirmed through the "Black Minuet"! I must see the film now.... and read more John Berendt. Thank you again!

Off to Halifax, Nova Scotia!
This book arrived safely today. I am thrilled that it finally made it to me. Can't wait to start it!
A fun read, for sure. I especially enjoyed the trial sections, and hearing all the scheming and planning that went into the defence. The black debutantes' ball was almost painful to read, I was terrified Chablis was going to do something horrendous!
Awaiting an address, will be sent away as soon as I get it.

Sorry for the delay! The book was mailed out today, off to deadsteen, as keithneese appears to have left bookcrossing some time ago. Hope all is well with him.
Arrived, have 1 book ahead of this. Looking forward to reading it!
Aug 3-- I enjoyed this book very much and will definitely put the movie on my Netflix queue. The characters were fascinating, and I agree with everyone else-- Lady Chablis at the Debutante Ball was quite a scene!!! Will contact the enxt person to keep it moving.
