"The nice men at P & O are worried. A succession of jewellery thefts from first-class passengers is hardly the best advertiesment for the cruise liners, particularly when it is likely that a passenger is doing the stealing.

Phryne Fisher, with her Lulu bob, green eyes, Cupid's bow lips and Chanel travelling suits, is exactly the sort of elegant sleuth to take on a ring of jewellery thieves aboard the high seas - or at least, aboard the SS HINEMOA on a luxury cruise to New Zealand. With the Maharani - the Great Queen of Saphires - as the bait, Phryne rises magnificently to the challenge."

This is the latest of the Phryne Fisher series and I enjoyed reading it. I have now read all of them except "Murder in Montparnasse" which seems to be unavailable at the moment.

There were two points about this book I didn't like:

1) Her appetite for men seems to be becoming an addiction which needs to be appeased

2) The jewel thief seemed to be persisting on a rather fruitless activity

Perhaps it is a good thing that Kerry Greenwood is branching out into another series with a new heroine.

Woohoo! A big haul today. Two Phryne's, lovely, and 3 others arrived at once. I'm a lucky girl.

Journal Entry 6 by wingcatsalivewing from Rooty Hill, New South Wales Australia on Friday, August 12, 2005
I really enjoyed this one although I have to agree with you pinkozcat that the sexual exploits have become part of the formula & therefore must appear no matter what. I can't believe that Phryne, with all her knowledge, wouldn't have realised that the sapphire was the real thing from the beginning. I think that was a bit of a mistake on the author's part as Phryne is supposed to be very knowing in these things. I loved the story anyway.

Kerry Greenwood is going to be at Abbey's bookshop next Tuesday so, if I remember, I'll pop in, get a book & say hello.

I'm not supposed to have read these books yet as I had a couple of other bookrings ahead of them, but I just couldn't resist.

Thanks pinkozcat. I'll send this off to Funkybamboozle on Monday. Posted 15/8/5.

Looking forward to reading this...although I have a differing viewpoint than both Catsalive and Pinkozcat - I like her sexual exploits and havent liked the ones that havent included much of this. However, I havent liked her later books and agree that it is probably good that she (kerry) branched out. I will read this during the week with my houghts of this novel

Is it just me or does Kerry Greenwood appear to have developed significantly as a writer since writing the novel previous to this? I found Death by Water to be much superior to her earlier novels in its writing style, but sadly lacking the more erotic scenes lol!!! Unfourtantly, it put me off the whole series a little because I dont read the books for how they are written, but because Phyrne was always easy to read between the more intense books.

I will send this on to Tantan early next week (fingers crossed)

Journal Entry 13 by tantan from Melbourne CBD, Victoria Australia on Tuesday, January 17, 2006
I enjoyed this one just as much as all the others I've read, but I'm glad I've always read other books in between them. Otherwise I think Phryne would begin to annoy me. Looking forward to the others, and also to seeing what the new series is like.

Heading off to astro2480 as soon as I have an address.

Edit January 20th, 2006: Posted to astro2480 today.

It seemed to take a long while for anything to really happen in this book - I enjoyed Blood & Circuses better - or maybe I shouldn't have read two consecutively. But having grown up on Agatha Christie, I still enjoyed the style of writing - and Phryne's character - and look forward to the rest of my Kerry Greenwood rings.

Astro2480 apparently posted this book off on 17th February. I have PM'd Littlemave to find out if it has arrived yet, or not.

Hopefully it is not lost in the postal system.

Death by Water? (or death by Phryne Fisher bookrings!)
This was a most apt book to take with me to NZ as it is set on a P&O ship going from Melbourne to and around the south island (not sure about the north island). As usual a good read, a little daliance for Phryne to help with stress and a whole bunch of people to analyse.
Interesting with all the bits of boat history, she always peppers her stories with lots of facts, and you really arent quite sure how much is stretched! It goes so well with the story.
I disagree about the addiction for men someone else mentioned, I think she rather restrained herself... >g< Odd sorts of goings on tho' with the drugging business and that oh so nice doctor.
I loved the fact that the champagne cocktail recipe was included at the end. I must try that one. :)
[I finished the book yesterday sitting on the step outside work as I had 1 page to go and just couldnt put it away for later! Funny look my boss gave me. ]

I have contacted viola7 to send on.

Journal Entry 19 by Littlemave from Weston, Australian Capital Territory Australia on Thursday, March 16, 2006
Finally managed to get to the post office on Wednesday 15th (gee, lunch time queues are horrendous!) so it is winging it's way to Viola7 now.

Journal Entry 20 by Viola7 from Brisbane, Queensland Australia on Saturday, March 18, 2006
Another one of Kerry Greenwood's wonderful mysteries about the fashionable Phyrne! This time it's set on a ship when cruises had class!

Journal Entry 21 by Viola7 from Brisbane, Queensland Australia on Sunday, April 16, 2006
I've enjoyed this more than the others! It had a lovely setting - a cruise in beautiful, cold, green New Zealand - and I liked the Maori stories. (No, I am not a New Zealander - I just like the cold!)

Journal Entry 22 by Viola7 from Brisbane, Queensland Australia on Tuesday, April 18, 2006
I am sending this home today but I can't find the lovely giraffe bookmark. I saw it yesterday so I will try to find it and send it back with another book.

Thank you very much for sharing this one!
