I am a HUGE Marian Keyes Fan, and this little slim book is one of 70 pocket penguins released as part of the Penugin 70th Birthday celebrations!

This is a lovely selection of Keyes' writing, and it doesn't appear to have been used in other books or in "Under the Duvet" - so it's all new stuff! All written with Keyes' trademark sense of humour and love for those around her...and mostly about shopping, shoes, handbag and travel!

My favourite bit is from the title story...

Nothing bad ever happens in Tiffany's
Oh, Holly Golightly, how could you? You try telling that to my credit card. See, what happened was, I had to buy a christening present for my god-daughter. But, once I got into the cool, gorgeous halls of Tiffany, something happened. I'm at a loss to describe it really, except that there were all these beautiful things. Pendants and bracelets and watches and earrings and little silver handmirrors and cute chunky keyrings. Suddenly it made sense to buy presents for everyone I knew for the rest of their lives.....

...Out in the street, it was like waking up from the most pleasant dream. Except that I had all these duck-egg blue carrier bags and a great dread of receiving my next credit card bill."

Arrived this morning as part of a bookring. I've read the first chapter so far and am loving it, since the book is full of travel tales, my other favourite subject (after books themselves!). It's a nice slim easy read and will take no time at all. I really like the idea of this Pocket Penguin series and might have to seek out the rest of them.

Thanks to the Holiday Weekend here, I had half an hour to myself to sit down and read this! I thoroughly enjoyed these short stories of the author's own travels, particularly since they involve two of my favourite places; New York and France. I will be sending this off to the next person on the list this week.

Journal Entry 6 by Iagegu from Preston, Lancashire United Kingdom on Tuesday, June 7, 2005
Arrived today. Such a slim volume which is a nice surprise as I have such a lot of reading at the moment. Hopefully will find time to read this in the next few days.

Thanks for sharing.

Journal Entry 7 by Iagegu from Preston, Lancashire United Kingdom on Tuesday, June 7, 2005
A very unusual book, not entirely what I expected. A series of short stories all based on the author's travel experiences.

I was impressed at managing to finish the book in a couple of hours. My favourite story was the first.

Nice easy quick book to read, in the same vein as Under the Duvet. I enjoy Marian Keyes' writing style though so it was an enjoyable hour spent reading this book.

Well, the postman delivered this this morning, and as he woke me up - I though - hey - i know what I'll d0 - I'll go back to bed and start reading it, seeing as it's only a small book! I think this Penguin seroes is a great idea and might just have to investigate a couple more titles!

I loved that thios was written in Marian's teademark style - though some if it was even funnier than I have become accustomed to. I won't give a way the part on the aeroplane which made me laugh as I don't want to spil the funniest part for others, but it was so very very true!

However, my very favourite line in the whole book was one which made think - the panic caused by fear in a villa of running out of bread - whilst amusing - provided a gem which makes perfect sense, in terms of life generally - "We had far too much, but it still wasn't enough. It was like we had become blind to what was really there and acquisition was the only thing that was important."

I think, with hindsight, one of my friends was trying to tell me I have done this very very thing - in realtion to my job/career situation....

So , a very amusing and yet also thought provoking book!

I read cover to cover in less than half an hour and really enjoyed it.

I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO sorry - update: 08/07/05
I thought I'd posted this off to next person - have just found it in glove box of my car!!! I promise it will be on its way on Monday.
So sorry for holding things up!
Thanks for sharing.

I´m so busy with the rings at the moment that I was so delighted when I noticed that this book has short stories and not too many pages. The stories made me smile and especially I liked the one of the trip to Russia.

I´ll take this book to post office this afternoon and it will be shipped to Romania. Enjoy blaisezabini12! And thanks nice-cup-of-tea for letting me take part to this ring :)

It's here:) Thank you Margih for the lovely postcard!

6 September 05:
I loved this little book - thank you Helen for organising the ring.
Keyes is an author I have discovered thanks to BC and in the last 6 months I've read 3 of her novels thanks to BCers. I think it was time for some short stories based on her own experience:)
My favorite story was I Shop, Therefore I Am, maybe because it made think about Becky Blomwood from the Shopaholic series.
I also liked the way in which the author introduced her relatives in her work.
I have pmed tho even though she'll be away from September 4th to Sept. 18th.

22 September: mailed today to elsita as tho has already managed to find a copy of this book.

Oh what a lovely book... Marian Keyes always has a good effect in me and this little stories were quite amusing :)
My favorite was the one about the (almost) trip to Siberia and the way she described the russians she met.

Thanks, nice-cup-of-tea, for sharing this book!
I'll send it to asterw as soon as I get her new adress in Spain.

I received the book two days ago. Thanks Elsita!

I´ve already read the first story (the one with the missing passport) while waiting for the bus and I was laughing out loud. It´s amazing to see that there are many things in common between Irish and Greeks! Only our "Saint Antony" is "Saint Fanourios" ;oD

Journal Entry 19 by asterw from Athens - Αθήνα, Attica Greece on Friday, November 25, 2005
I finally finished the book. As always, Marian Keyes made me laugh out loud several times. Apart from the first story, I also enjoyed very much her travel to Russia. It was a good companion when I was stuck in the bus coming back from work.

I´ve just PMed doris and I´ll send the book to her as soon as I get her address. Thank you nice-cup-of-tea for organizing this Bookring and Elsita for sending the book to me!

I had actually forgotten that I had signed up for the book ring so I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived. A very quick read and my first exposure to Marian Keyes. The book was much shorter than I expected and made me laugh out load in quite a few places. I will definitely look up this author again!
