Journal Entry 1 by enitsirhc72 from Bickenbach, Hessen Germany on Wednesday, May 18, 2005
Amazon.com's Best of 2001 They were just a soft, ordinary pair of thrift-shop jeans until the four girls took turns trying them on--four girls, that is, who are close friends, about to be parted for the summer, with very different sizes and builds, not to mention backgrounds and personalities. Yet the pants settle on each girl's hips perfectly, making her look sexy and long-legged and feel confident as a teenager can feel. "These are magical Pants!" they realize, and so they make a pact to share them equally, to mail them back and forth over the summer from wherever they are. Beautiful, distant Lena is going to Greece to be with her grandparents; strong, athletic Bridget is off to soccer camp in Baja, California; hot-tempered Carmen plans to have her divorced father all to herself in South Carolina; and Tibby the rebel will be left at home to slave for minimum wage at Wallman's. Over the summer the Pants come to represent the support of the sisterhood, but they also lead each girl into bruising and ultimately healing confrontations with love and courage, dying and forgiveness. Lena finds her identity in Greece and the courage not to reject love; Bridget gets in over her head with an older camp coach; Carmen finds her father ensconced with a new fiancée and family; and Tibby unwillingly takes on a filmmaking apprentice who is dying of leukemia. Each girl's story is distinct and engrossing, told in a brightly contemporary style. Like the Pants, the reader bounces back and forth among the four unfolding adventures, and the melange is spiced with letters and witty quotes. Ann Brashares has here created four captivating characters and seamlessly interwoven their stories for a young adult novel that is fresh and absorbing. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell

Journal Entry 2 by enitsirhc72 from Bickenbach, Hessen Germany on Wednesday, May 18, 2005
I really liked this book. The four girls grew close to my heart and was eager to know, what happened to them, how they changed during the summer and how they sent the pants on to the next one. A Pants-Ring *gg* For me Lena was the closest to my character, but I also found myself a little bit in the sullen Carmen. But I think, I have nothing in common with Bridget. Now I want to know, what happens in the next summer...

Juni an Sunneschii weitergeben.

Journal Entry 5 by KatColorado from Zürich, Zürich Switzerland on Tuesday, May 24, 2005
Ups, what did I do. I started reading it this afternoon and I just couldn't stop anymore. It's almost midnight now but I had to finish it right away. It's not that the story is particularly deep but it kind of sucked me in ;-)) I liked Tibby best. She started out with the boring summer, a stupid job, all her friends gone. Then she met Bailey and she started to look behind the obvious of people's faces, saw that there were a lot of interesting stories hidden behind the normal. Even though her summer was very sad in the end I think she learned most from it. I also liked Bridget. In the beginning she got on my nerves, with all her activity, with her overlarge selfesteem. Then she lost it and I could understand her reasons much better. Carmen and Lena were okay but I found them not as interesting as the other two (which shows that everybody likes different things, because I think it was just the other way round with you, enitsirhc72...) In the beginning I thought I would just like to have a similar pair of jeans, a pair that just makes you look better. Then I changed my mind, now I think the friendship thing is much more important. I will pass the book to Sunneschii at the next meetup in Zürich, which will be on the 9th of June.

I got this book today at the meetup! Now I know what I have to do in train.... I have to pass this book to toefte tomorrow evening!:-) EDIT after reading: I liked the book.. it was definitely the right lecture for a train travel. But I had to be careful: Only 50 pages an hour...;-) Well... I liked Carmen best. Or Tibby. I think I'm most like Carmen... caring for others, but emotional and a bit lost herself. But they are all nice... and their friendship is great!:-)

Well, unfortunately I couldn't make it to the MeetUp. But I picked the book up at Arcon's today. Thanks for giving it to him, Sunneschii! And thank you very much for the swiss chocolate! :) Ich werde sie mir gut einteilen. :) Tomorrow morning I'm taking off to a seminar, which will last until friday. I know from experience that I will have very much freetime at this seminar, and I hope that I can use this to read the book.

Journal Entry 10 by toefte from Köln, Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany on Saturday, June 18, 2005
Yesterday I got back from the seminar. And yesterday I finished reading the book. I wanted to use the book as a pastime in the numerous breaks, not knowing that once I've got into it, I would ever be looking forward to the next break. :) I really liked the book. It was funny, sad and thought-provoking at the same time. I liked all of the characters Ann Brashares created and can't really decide to whom I felt connected the most. Maybe Lena, because I like the way she reacts to different things and how she cares about things that are important to her. Or Tibby, because I know this process of opening up to other persons and how hard it is. But what I like most about this book is, that it shows a real friendship. A friendship that is so deep, that being away from each other only lets it grow deeper. --- Thank you very much, enitsirhc72, for starting this bookring!

A touching story of a deep and enviable friendship. I felt closest to Lena, could feel with Carmen and cry with Tibby, and found it hard to understand Bridget. Now I'd like to read the sequels, too.

Journal Entry 18 by eimer42 from Germering, Bayern Germany on Thursday, December 22, 2005
The book just arrived. Thank you! I hope it´s some good entertainment for the Christmas days. Update 30.12.2005: This was good entertainment on my train ride when I went home for Christmas. I really liked this book. But I am not really excited about it, which is probably because I expected a lot due to the many very excited comments I have read before I decided to participate in this bookring. Although there is nothing I disliked about this book. I think I am just too old for it because the main topic it is dealing with is growing up and the struggels of adolescence. I am sure I would have loved it some years ago and really recommend it for twelve to sixteen-year-old girls. I think I have never had more difficulties to decide how many stars I should give a book (because it is is really good but I didn´t like it enough to give a lot of stars). Okay..hm..let's say...hmm... I decide for seven stars!

Thanks for sending! The book arrived some days ago, but I just returned from my holidays yesterday evening. Update (22.1.06): Finished reading, and already wrote to mimi 4711 to ask for her adress. As for the valuation of the book- it seems I have the same problem as eimer42..I'm just too old! I mean, I really liked the book, it was nicely written and lovely story, but I didn't get excited about it as I would have expected from the other comments before! so it's also only seven stars from me, but that's not the book's fault...

Journal Entry 21 by mimi4711 from Köln, Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany on Friday, June 30, 2006
I've finished the book!! First i thought that i might not make it, but i did. I did like the book, although i think i'm too old for it (as some others have said before). It would have been a really excellent read being 20 or younger. I liked the four different characters and the style of writing - but the book did make me feel old. The four girls experienced a lot of things - i reckon - you can only experience when you're young. I liked Baily and Tibby best. edit 3.7.2006: im Auftrag von enitsirhc72 eröffne ich eine erweiterte RING-Liste: 11. Sternschnuppe28 12. lady-liberty 13. favouritecat 14.

Journal Entry 24 by Sternschnuppe28 from Mainz, Rheinland-Pfalz Germany on Tuesday, July 18, 2006
what a sweet book for the summer! I really loved and enjoyed reading about Tibby´s, Lena´s, Bridget´s and Carmen´s first summer apart. All four girls are special. The story is told in a way, that you can hardly put the book aside and just want to keep on reading about their second summer ... I already looked for the book in the German forum, but have been not quite successful till now and did a second search in the book wish one, where I eventually found book No. 3 this morning. So maybe anyone from this ring´s participants has book 2 and is wiling to borrow it? Or more are interested in reading the other books? - in that case, just let me know. Either way I find the book, I will start a ring, even if I have to buy it with amazon. I mailed the book off to lady-liberty two days ago.

I finished the book yesterday - it was a good fast read and I enjoyed it a lot... Even though I couldn't relate to the girls (I AM too old :-)) I liked their different ways and experiences (I was a bit annoyed with Lena who couldn't open her mouth to set things right...) So what happens to the book now?

Journal Entry 35 by Qantaqa from Dachau, Bayern Germany on Saturday, October 17, 2009
It took me quite some time to start reading the book (lots of bookrings piling up), but once I got started, I finished in less than two days. I loved the book a lot - so much that I went ahead and ordered the second volume in the series right after finishing this book. Now I know for sure that I am still sixteen at heart :)! I think I liked Tibby's story best, with Carmen's a close second, and Bridget's story the least (though I really liked the ending to that story as well). Thanks a lot for sharing! The book is now ready to travel back home.
