A great story.
A departure for Ken Folett but a masterpiece!

I received this book from Gullinaarr as a part of the 2006 Holiday Gift Giving. It's been on my wishlist for some time, so I can't wait to read it. It sounded so fascinating when someone described it to me; I haven't read any of FOllett's work before so it's new territory to me.
Thank you so much Gullinaarr!

started reading this book today :)
I'm enjoying Follett's descriptions of architecture and day-to-day life of monks, masons, etc. but the modern language is killing me. 'Fuck,' 'cunt,' and other insults were not in use in the 12th century. Follett obviously went to a lot of trouble to research the world he creates, yet he ruins the authenticity of his work with the carelessly considered language his nobles and peasants toss about.
I'm about halfway through at this point.

I finished the book last night and really enjoyed all the political intrigue that surrounds something as simple (?) and straightforward as building a cathedral. It was quite refreshing that eventually the surviving characters got what they deserved, after so many pages of setbacks, misery and triumph for the bad guys, but the inconsistancies with the spoken language still bothered me, and interrupted the flow of the story for me. (It's like when people 'update' Shakespeare - it just doesn't sit right with me.)
