A piffle. That's how I was going to begin my review of this book about a set of amusingly stereotypical professors. "A piffle," I said out loud. At this point my husband spoke up: "You should say, 'it is piffle,' since piffle is a stuff, like rice." There ensued a heated argument between us (the both of us professors in irrelevant fields) about the correct usage of the term 'piffle.' This is ironic, you see, as the book is about a set of eggheaded German professors of philology who attempt to play tennis from a rulebook, quibble over minutia, and are caught in various situations made comical by their overly rational approach. I found the book to be a mere trifle (a word we can agree on), in that there isn't any plot to speak of and each chapter presents an episode in the life of the ambitious Professor Dr. von Igelfeld. I enjoyed reading it--it is ever so brief--and although I feel compelled to give it a lowish score for its lack of depth or plot, I can recommend it as a fun read, especially if you are an overly rational or bookish sort, like my dear husband.

If you found this book, kindly leave me a note in the form of a journal entry here (be anonymous, if you wish). I'm curious!
