walking through new-fallen snow in the forest, twleve year old nicky dillon and her father find a newborn baby abandoned in the icy cold night, its survival only possible by the sheer coincidence of their having chosen this path for their evening stroll.

"a mesemerising story of the secrets we keep and the secrets we unearth, and the power of forgiveness to mend even the most battered souls"

Thanks for the ring, Tazzell!

Journal Entry 9 by Bunnybee from Amarillo, Texas USA on Thursday, July 21, 2005

8 out of 10

Started on it July 5th, finished around July 15th while on my trip. Good story!! I had no idea it would start out THAT quickly! Parts of it did slow down alot later on, but kept you wondering what will happen next so it was easy to keep reading. I think I could've read this in a couple of days had I not been busy on a trip. Another Anita Shreve book full of interesting relationships and seeing how people react and relate to each other. It was sad, but yet hopeful at the same time, and not depressing. I really enjoyed it, even though it wasn't some action-packed novel!

Just PMed the next reader, and I will get it mailed as soon as I have an address. :-) Thank you, Tazell- for the ring!

Wonderful book! This is the best of Anita Shreve IMO. I took a few days to read it because I didn't have the time to sit and do it all at once. But I COULD have!

The characters are wonderfully written. I was right there with them all the time. Thanks SO MUCH for letting me participate in this bookray, Tazzell.

I'll mail this off to Snowy652 tomorrow.

I very much enjoyed this book -- the first that I have read by Anita Shreve (and hopefully not my last).

I found the characters interesting all the way through and I was intrigued by their relationships with one another. At times it was a bit flat but it only lasted for a few pages before it picked up again.

Thanks for sharing. I already have the address for "sejent" and will be sending it out on the 26th

Thanks for sharing this one. I love Anita Shreve's books I have read so far ( she was a new author to my when I joined BC and I'm thoroughly won over) Her books are so powerful but understated. My only criticism would be of the ending which I found a little bit of a let down compared to the rest of the book.

Loved this, read it in a couple of sessions! It is a very simple story, but very moving and compelling. I highly recommend.
AMAZON.CO.UK:
Best-selling author Anita Shreve has chosen as her latest protagonist a 12-year-old girl, whose life has not just been touched by tragedy, but blown apart by it. Nicky and her father have moved to a remote house on the outskirts of a remote village somewhere in New Hampshire, following a road accident which has wiped out the rest of their family. Nicky¹s father would like to live like a hermit, but recognises, even through his intense grief, that 12-year-olds need many things the world has to offer.
And then, one afternoon, just as the light is beginning to fade, a brief walk in the snow-swept woods surrounding their home and a chance encounter brings father and daughter unexpectedly together. United in their shock at finding a newborn baby wrapped in a bloody sleeping bag, they move heaven and earth to save her life. They manage to get the infant to hospital, yet despite an outpouring of emotion, the pair soon start to fall back into their old ways; tiptoeing carefully around each other, fearing to speak the name of their grief, pretending at normality. Until, that is, a pretty young woman comes knocking on their door and all three are forced to question their motives and look into each other¹s hearts.
Light on Snow is a beautifully sad reflection on life and loss, grief and hope and recognising the time in our lives to forgive others and ourselves and move forward. Anita Shreve has proved once again that she is a gifted exponent of the human psyche and the dual frailty and immense strength of the human spirit.

I have been in touch with efs300 who now has a replacement copy but has accepted this copy so that the long list can be split. Will be sending on to next person as soon as possible.

Taking into account we are having unusually hot weather around here (almost 40ºC), this book was "refreshing". But it is more the book you should read by the fireplace, rather than when we are trying to avoid getting sunburned just by going outside!

Anyway, I really liked this book and am looking forward to read more by this author.

I will send it to tabbystripes this week.

Thank you all for sharing the book! (it's in a pretty good condition, considering that it is such a well-travelled book!).

Edit 24/07 - sent today!

This was my first Anita Shreve book and i had great expectations from it. I started the book and sfinished it in a couple of days between my work and shopping. The characters were so real you could be with then in the situations and expereince the pain, anxiety and distance. Though it is well written, it falls flat in places but the momentum picks up in a couple of pages.

Please spare a moment to sign my GuestMap!
