Amir is the son of a wealthy Kabul merchant, a member of the ruling caste of Pashtuns. Hassan, his servant and constant companion, is a Hazara, a despised and impoverished case. Their uncommon bond is torn by Amir's choice to abandon his friend amidst the increasing ethnic, religious, and political tensions of the dying years of the Afghan monarchy, and apparently dissolved when Amir and his father flee to California to escape the Soviet invasion, leaving Hassan and his own gentle father to a terrible fate.

I found this story a moving and touching story about the caste system and how it affects relationships and friendships. It is definitely a book I recommend to friends to read.

I finally picked this up since it was my bookclubs book of the month. I'm sorry that I waited so long to read it - this was an incredible story! It was so touching to read about the guilty behavior of a child and how that affected his whole life. He finally was able to Be Good Again but only because the sad state of things. Wonderful book!! Am definitely going to be passing this along.
