BEGIN NOW, TO EXPERIENCE THE JOY OF FEELING GOOD"

This is an excellent book with many useful techniques for overcoming depression. It might even be worthwhile for those that aren't depressed to read, if not to utilize themselves, then to develop a better understanding of those who suffer from depression. I think I will hold onto this one for a while, and refer back to it when I need it.

Sorry Breeni for holding this up. I'll be shipping it off to Canada Monday. I just haven't been able to find the free time to read. :(

Journal Entry 10 by titihood on Tuesday, November 1, 2005
Got this in the post today, have a few other rings to read first but will get to this one ASAP or read in tandem with another book. Thanks for sharing Breeni! :)
November 14th, 2005: Due to my inundation with other rings/rays I decided to skim through this book. I think it would have been more 'useful' (I think a book like this is nearly always useful) about a year ago when I was in the darkest depths of depression, I am out now but sometimes need reminders of how to keep positive. As I always say, it boils down to a question of perspective, and if you can change your perspective you can change your world. Usually a lot more easier said than done.
A film that actually helped me a lot is called 'What The Bleep Do We Know?', very interesting, about quantum physics but discusses how we are creators of our own lives and in a way destinies.
Sending positive thoughts :)
Pyan asked to be skipped so am waiting for CdnBlueRose's address. Thanks for sharing Breeni.

Arrived today. I have one other ring that I'm reading at the moment, but I'll get to this as soon as I can. Thanks for including me in this ring, Breeni!

Edited 15 December 2005: FINALLY finished the ring I was reading when this arrived, so I am starting this tonight. I PM'd for Heaven's address and will try and get through this quick so I can mail it on. I just noticed tonight that this was supposed to be a 2-week hold rather then the more usual 1-month hold, so will definitely redouble my efforts to finish this quick! Sorry for stalling...

Journal Entry 13 by nwpassage from Prince George, British Columbia Canada on Saturday, December 17, 2005
I don't really have the time or energy for something this serious right now, and tonight when I got about 60 pages in, I realized I will definitely have to buy a copy of this for my PC anyway, and a copy to lend/give to my mom. With that plan, I'm going to send this on to Heaven150 tomorrow. Thanks for sharing, and for making me aware of this book, Breeni!

Journal Entry 14 by Heaven150 from Edmonton, Alberta Canada on Friday, December 23, 2005
Received today. Since I have a couple of days off for Christmas I will be starting this right away. Thanks for sharing.

Very helpful. Lots of ideas of how to overcome depression and interesting analogies, some that made me smile. I think my favourite was about the mother duck and the babies and just because the babies are following, doesn't mean the mother knows where she's going.

Waiting on CandyDarling's address.

Journal Entry 16 by Heaven150 from Edmonton, Alberta Canada on Friday, January 20, 2006
Sorry for the delay getting this out. I finally received CandyDarling's address (thanks Breeni) and then life hit me. Mailed this air mail yesterday, hopefully it arrives quickly.

Journal Entry 17 by CandyDarling from Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Thursday, February 2, 2006
I received this book a week ago, and it could not have arrived at a better time! I hope you don't mind if I explain why...

I've been having trouble with my studies for a long time, and my anxiety has gradually gotten worse. I've even had trouble taking care of everyday things, like responding to bookcrossing pm's. Finally my doctor and I thought it would be best if I tried antidepressants, so-called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and I've been using them since November 24th. They have helped, I've been more upbeat and less anxious, and both my mother and my boyfriend say there's definitely been a change for the better. But my problems haven't disappeared, and I've now been searching for the something that would help.

I've known for a long time I'm a perfectionist, and SandDanz also diagnosed me with obsessive-compulsive disorder. ;) I have been paying closer attention to my anxiety attacks, and discovered that they are most likely to happen when I'm afraid I haven't done my homework well enough, or when I'm stressed out because I have been procrastinating, and finally I realize I won't have enough time to devote to a project. This inspired me to order two books:
- When Perfect Isn't Good Enough: Strategies for Coping With Perfectionism by Martin M. Antony, Richard P. Swinson
- The Now Habit: A Strategic Program for Overcoming Procrastination and Enjoying Guilt-Free Play by Neil Fiore

After I ordered the books, I couldn't wait to get my hands on them. And the next day, Feeling Good arrived! I have read the first 80 pages, and I'm positive this book is exactly what I need! I already discovered my biggest problem is "All-or-Nothing Thinking". Unless I'm perfect at everything, I'm not good enough. I'm now more aware of my thoughts, and the negative thought-patterns that create anxiety.

I will pm mirp for her address, and I'll try to read the rest of the book as quickly as possible. Thank you Breeni for starting this wonderful bookring!

Journal Entry 18 by CandyDarling from Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Tuesday, February 28, 2006
I finally finished the book, and I will send it to mirp asap. I found the book helpful, and read it all the way through, even though some of the chapters didn't really apply to my problems. The info in the end on medication was terribly outdated, but very interesting nevertheless.

I think the beginning of the book was the most helpful part. The idea that your thoughts might be the cause of your depression was interesting, and it sounds very plausible. I have always been of the opinion that your attitude is the key factor in how your going to react to things, I just didn't know how to apply it. I too am guilty of distorted thinking. ;)

I was somewhat annoyed by the repetitive way of describing different problems and they way to solve them by the time I got to the end. Mostly because during the time I read this book, I realized it's much harder to apply the techniques described in this book to real life problems than you'd think after reading the enthusiastic comments by all the people cured in this book... I also noticed that all mood swings aren't caused by distorted thinking, and sometimes you just feel blue even though nothing is wrong.

I really liked the first part, "Theory and Research", where Dr. Burns describes how this therapy works. The second part, "Practical Applications" was helpful too, especially the parts about building self-esteem and beating procrastination. Part 4, "Prevention and Personal Growth" was very good too, especially because it made me realize new things about myself, and I feel like I understand my way of thinking much better now.

Thank you Breeni for making me aware of this book, it really is a gem!

After calling my mum at home, she informed me that a book arrived today... I asked her for the number so I can already let you know that it has arrived safe and sound. Thanks for passing it along mirp!

Actually I'm happy that I'm last on the list because it'll give me some time to get through this book at a slow pace. I'll pass it on afterwards, that's a promise! Thanks for sharing Breeni!

I've read certain parts of this book but not everything. It sure is an interesting read with lots of good tips that seem very useful. But you always have to take the step from reading it and putting it into action. And that's not always an easy thing to do. ;-)

Eventhough I was the last person on this ray, I've kept the book way too long. So it's about time for this book to travel a bit further. This time as a RABCK to Morgaine1PP in Finland. I'll be mailing it out sometime this week.

What a delightful surprise - thanks whitehorsy! Finding this book in the mail really made my day. I will dig into this right away.
