Got it in the mail from a book trade! YAY!
What a nice story. I definitely see why it won a newberry award. Poor Nat went through so much...it's nice to think it had a happy ending :)

Arrived today along with Old Yeller. I'll start on one or the other shortly and get them both out to the next person as quickly as I can. Thanks for sharing.
When I was in sixth grade (back in the dark ages) one of my teachers read a portion of this book aloud to us at the end of each day. I remembered enjoying it but I couldn't remember the plot at all. This time around I enjoyed learning the maritime terminology and traditions of the New England sailors. The book also did a fair job of capturing the romance of the sea as well as the dangers - certainly enough for its intended audience of children.
Sending along to Bookhunter21 today.

I found this book in a stack in my bedroom when I was cleaning for a garage sale about 2 weeks ago. OOOPS! I think it was travelling with Old Yeller, but got separated in the Newbery flood of '06. It looks like it came with Old Yeller on August 9 and I forgot to journal its arrival. Many apologies!
I very much enjoyed it. Nat was such an optimistic fellow; it was a pleasure to follow his career from indentured servant to captain. I also enjoyed the story of developments in scientific navigation. I think the challenge of discovering how to calculate longitude is one of the most fascinating historical stories. I think Nat's idea of teaching the men before the mast to navigate so they could better themselves was great and saved many lives. A ripping yarn!
Will send on to tuff this week and may be reunited with Old Yeller.

Sent today to tuff517. Enjoy!
Received this 11/14 - will start ASAP.
got a couple of days ago. will be reading w/in a month hopefully.
this is one of the more enjoyable newbery books i've read this round. i haven't read many seafaring books like this, and i enjoyed the detail in this much more than
-the true confessions of charlotte doyle-. the events are entertaining enough to almost make you forget that there isn't much of a plot, which isn't too surprising seeing as how bowditch is actually a real person. wikipedia as usual is a great source to compare w/ the book. looking forward to reading more (and more visceral) books at sea.
thanks. will be sending on when i finish old yeller.

arrived with Old Yeller, a joke and a smile. :)
Looks like it will be a good read; will start as soon as I'm finished with my current bookring book.

Book arrived safe and sound. Looks interesting, I haven't heard of this one or the author before.
I enjoyed this one quite a bit and liked the fact that this was based on a real person. Had he gone to Harvard, Nat would probably not have made such an impact. The writing was easy to read and understand and you almost feel as if you're learning along with Nat. He was a likable character and one to admire.
Thanks for sharing this one!
