I am thrilled to receive this book from my new friend in the north. Too bad I have to go to work...I'd rather be reading this!

Journal Entry 4 by alrescate from Strafford, Missouri USA on Wednesday, October 9, 2002
Christopher Moore--one twisted imagination, one great book. This was a fun romp! A love sick sea beast, an aging B movie star and a pot smoking cop...I couldn't have come up with this in my wildest dreams. I am so glad I got a chance to read this one. I only gave it nine stars because I liked "Lamb" just a tiny bit more. I should probably give it ten...

Thanks again Ottawabill for clueing me in on this one!

I've heard so many things about this book - thanks so much for sending it! I'll journal again when I've read it.

Journal Entry 9 by wingcestmoiwing from Hamilton, Ontario Canada on Thursday, April 24, 2003
So far so good, just started reading this today and am completely hooked on Christopher Moore. The story is so ridiculously impossible that it is actually believable...if that makes sense. His writing style reminds me alot of Douglas Adams.

I'll journal again when I'm finished it....promised to GoryDetails next!

Journal Entry 10 by wingcestmoiwing from Hamilton, Ontario Canada on Sunday, April 27, 2003
Completely enjoyed this story. Moore's sense of humour is sometimes subtle...and sometimes as subtle as a brick house falling on your head..but always enjoyable and laugh out loud ridiculous.

Journal Entry 11 by wingGoryDetailswing from Nashua, New Hampshire USA on Wednesday, May 7, 2003
Hooray! The Lust Lizard is here! [I just wanted to say that. {grin}] Since it was BookCrossing that hooked me on Christopher Moore in the first place, I'm glad I can continue to feed my habit. Looking forward to reading this one; thanks!

OK, "Lust Lizard" just became my second-favorite Moore book [nothing's beaten "Lamb" so far]. It's got a flavor of the wonderfully cheesy "giant monster" B-movies, blended with some small-town angst, interestingly varied sex [Would you believe inflatable dolphins? How about weed-whackers? I swear I'm not making this up], relatively low-key (under the circumstances) violence, and a hint or three of H. P. Lovecraft - along with a lot of humor, from the subtle to the very rude indeed. I laughed a lot.

Some of the prose is wonderfully purple, as in this description of the Head of the Slug Saloon:
The Slug was full of Blues and smoke and people chasing shots and running from sadness. If they'd been dogs, they would have all been in the yard eating grass and trying to yak up whatever was making them feel so lousy. Not a bone gnawed, not a ball chased - all tails went unwagged. Oh, life is a fast cat, a short leash, a flea in that place where you just can't scratch. It was dog sad in there, and Catfish Jefferson was the designated howler.
Or this, my favorite literary sound effect of the week:
...a roaring that sounded like someone had dropped the entire cast of 'The Lion King' in a deep fryer
Despite the previous passages, the book's not a downer at all; in fact, calling it "the feel-good giant-monster book of the last decade" would not be out of line. The cast of characters is fun, too, from the former scream queen to the Terminatrix/saloon-owner, the pothead sheriff to the aged Bluesman, and the frisky dog to the really big lizard... Strongly recommended.

[I didn't realize until halfway through the book that it's a semi-sequel to "Practical Demonkeeping" - that is, the book stands alone, but shares a location and some secondary characters with the earlier book. I don't think it hurts the experience any, but if I'd known I'd have read "Demonkeeping" first. FWIW.]

Thanks "GoryDetails". I'll journal again when I've read it. I will probably read it in July at the beach.

Journal Entry 15 by jmg49 from Woodstock, Ontario Canada on Sunday, June 22, 2003
This is the most fun i've had reading a book in a long time. A whole slew of wacky characters made this very funny book come alive. I particularly liked the thought processes of Skinner, the dog.
I am giving this to "porchbee" who will mail it to "JennyO", when she has read it.

Journal Entry 16 by ailien from Woodstock, Ontario Canada on Tuesday, June 24, 2003
Thanks jmg49. I can't wait to experience this novel. It sounds hilarious. I'll get right to it then send it to JennyO as promised.

Journal Entry 17 by ailien from Woodstock, Ontario Canada on Tuesday, August 5, 2003
This book was an excellent satire. Down right silly and at the same time true to life.
Sending this off to JennyO day after tomorrow.

Journal Entry 18 by O-Jenny from Temple, Texas USA on Saturday, August 16, 2003
Got this one in the mail today. It's the only one of Moore's I haven't read yet, so I'm really looking forward to it! I'll journal again once I've finished it and then send it on to CasualReader who would like to read it next.

Thanks for sharing jmg49 and porchbee!

Journal Entry 19 by O-Jenny from Temple, Texas USA on Friday, August 22, 2003
Hilarious book. Thanks so much for sending this one to me jmg49 and porchbee. It's on its way to CasualReader next.

I'm amazed every time I pick up one of Moore's books. I have no idea how he comes up with the insanity he writes, but I sure am glad he does. He does sarcasm better than anyone alive, and his books always make me laugh out loud. This one was no exception.

So without voices all she had to deal with was the hallucination. The trailer was still sitting there, but admittedly, it just looked like a trailer. Molly could imagine trying to tell the shrink at county about it when they admitted her.

"So you saw a trailer?"
"That's right."
"And you live in a trailer park?"
"Yep."
"I see," the shrink would say. And somewhere between those two little words the judgment would be pronounced: crazy.

The cast of characters in this one is impressive too: Theophilus Crowe -- constable and pothead, Molly Michon -- Kendra, Warrior Babe of the Outland, Catfish Jefferson -- blues singer, Winston Krauss -- pharmacist and marine life enthusiast (heh), Estelle Boyet -- artist in residence, Gabe Fenton -- biologist (specializing in animal behavior), Val Riordan -- psychiatrist, and Steve -- sea beast. Oh, and the usual gang from Pine Cove makes appearances too: Mavis, HP, Jenny. I'm still amazed that Moore was able to make a sea monster a sympathetic character; maybe the fact that he was lactose-intolerant helped.

OK, enough. Moore's hilarious. Buy his books. Read them. Give them to your friends. They'll love you for it.

Boy, this book has gotten around! I'm proud to walk in the footsteps of the likes of ottawabill, alrescate, Aisho, cestmoi, GoryDetails, jmg49, porchbee, and JennyO.

I am soon going to be starting on a Christopher Moore Reading Marathon. I have another book or two to read before I can start, but, having already read Practical Demonkeeping and Lamb, I will be reading the following, hopefully without interuption:

Island of the Sequined Love Nun
The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove
Bloodsucking Fiends
Fluke

As far as I can tell, all I'm missing is Coyote Blue. Is that right? Anyone? Anyone?

Journal Entry 21 by CasualReader on Sunday, December 7, 2003
Well, I finally found the time to read this book, and I loved it! Christopher Moore's gift for oddball descriptions never ceases to amaze me. I mean, who else can get away with a description like this:

“Mavis moved behind the bar with a grim, if wobbly, determination, drinking coffee from a gargoyle-green mug while a Tarryton extra long dangled from her lips, dropping long ashes down the front of her sweater like the smoking turds of tiny ghost poodles.”

Smoking turns of tiny ghost poodles? That's priceless!

Seeing as this book has made it a great distance, I'm going to send it on a nice long trip shortly. To Fanclub in Hawaii. I figure since Christopher Moore is moving there, his book should follow.

Mailing off to WistfulDragon as part of a trade...enjoy!

Well, I must say that I loved this well-traveled copy as much as everyone else did. I think this is my favorite Moore book so far. The twisted humor just kills me. This book will continue its journey around the globe by heading to WistfulDragon.

Journal Entry 26 by WistfulDragon from Streatham, Greater London United Kingdom on Tuesday, April 27, 2004
Thanks Fanclub, book and note arrived today! I vaguely remember choosing the book, but it has been enough of a gap for its arrival to be a wonderful surprise. When I have read it (it is fourth on my TBR) I'll offer it up to fellow UK BXers so that it can keep travelling - after journalling what I think of it of course!

Journal Entry 27 by WistfulDragon from Streatham, Greater London United Kingdom on Wednesday, May 19, 2004
I love this book! It is only the second of his I have read - the first was Practical Demonkeeping. Now I know I will have to read the rest.
It is a rollicking, exciting, comedic read, even when exposing the murky depths of human psyche. It has fetishes, sex scenes, and other sordid bits, but is still somehow very innocent. This is the sort of book I won't let my children read, but can't wait until they are old enough to enjoy it. Thank you so much for letting me read it!
I will be offering it up to other BXers on this side of the pond, so hopefully its travels will continue.

Arrived here safely. How could I refuse this one? Described as 'Godzilla meets The Bridges of Madison County' sounds like it will be a good follow-on from Practical Demonkeeping.

Journal Entry 29 by wingNetstationwing from Coventry, West Midlands United Kingdom on Wednesday, June 2, 2004
This is why I love Bookcrossing. I'd never read Christopher Moore 'til I was introduced to his work here, and now I know I'm going to have to read it all.

This book is so enjoyably scabrous - I never thought I'd get to use that word in a review - but that's what it is in both senses of the word. It's satirical, and funny, and even more than that it's witty. Moore's imagination takes flight, and takes the reader with it. His work reminds me of Douglas Adams, as another journaller has said, but also of Robert Rankin. There are so many good quotes that can be pulled from the characters that I thought I'd use one from Moore himself as he scene sets for us.

Winter in Pine Cove;

"Surfers don their wetsuits against the chill of storm waves, and white sharks adjust their diets to include shrink-wrapped dude-snacks on fibreglass crackers"

Of course there's no harm either, in a book with a principal character called Steve ;o)

Off to Loopy now, who I'm sure will love it.

Journal Entry 30 by loopy1 from Herne Bay, Kent United Kingdom on Friday, June 4, 2004
Oh, I'm meant to journal? sorry, I was too busy reading down all the other entries for this book - I was going to say wonderful book. I suppose I shouldn't judge before I read it, but since I love Douglas Adams and I loved Lamb I'm really looking forward to a good read from this book.
Thanks to all who went before me!

Journal Entry 31 by loopy1 from Herne Bay, Kent United Kingdom on Wednesday, June 16, 2004
I didn't like this as much as Lamb, and my reading of it probably suffered because I was expecting too much.
But I soon settled down into the characters - Theo was my favourite, although I really liked Skinner as well - especially his references to the Food Guy!

A wacky tale with well-drawn characters. Thanks for sharing this!

Journal Entry 32 by tiggsybabes from Pontefract, West Yorkshire United Kingdom on Saturday, June 26, 2004
Received in post today thanks :) They're like buses! I think I've had half a dozen rings in the past 2 days. Yikes!

Journal Entry 33 by tiggsybabes from Pontefract, West Yorkshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, July 13, 2004
Wow! I'm now a Christopher Moore fan :) Not read any of his books before & I really enjoyed this & have read it every night for the past few days & finished it this morning :)

I even found myself warming to & sympathising with Steve & thinking of a few people I wouldn't mind him eating *g*

I see LucyCat is next on the list & assume that she's going to the UnConvention, so will take it with me after double checking.

Journal Entry 34 by lucycat from Hull, East Yorkshire United Kingdom on Monday, July 19, 2004
Handed over by Anna at the seriously fab BCUK Unconvention this weekend...thank you - and how lovely to see so many familiar names in the journalling, too! :O)

Chris Moore is one of my BookCrossing 'finds' - another reason to be thankful for BC (as if one were needed!)

This was excellent as always, and a very welcome reminder of the first of his books I had passed to me, 'Practical Demon-Keeping' - this too is funny, slightly warped, fast-paced, and populated by fabulously OTT characters. Need a favourite bit? Probably 'All You Need To Know' - oh, and the suggested alternate use of the weed-whacker... :O)

Journal Entry 35 by ziggythecat from Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Monday, August 23, 2004
Arrived back from my hols to find this waiting for me, much nicer than the usual pile of bills that build up while you're away (they were there too but hey!). And what a gorgeous sparkly, starry, shiny bookmark in there as well. Thanks heaps Lucycat

Journal Entry 36 by ziggythecat from Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Thursday, September 9, 2004
Wow, that was fun! Loved Skinner, Loved Catfish Jefferson - especially his tale of trying to 'get the blues on' his friend. Christopher Moore has a way of starting off reasonable & then taking things just that little bit further than 'normal' good taste allows, great.

A treat of a book. Sure you'll love it whan it arrives jords.
