I got this signed by the author when he came to read here in Washington--whoo! I'm about a third of the way in, and it's good but so far it doesn't feel as important as Atonement, more like a string of excellent set pieces. I can really see the similarities with Mrs. Dalloway. McEwan said Virginia Woolf was the furthest thing from his mind when he was writing this, but I can't help thinking there's at least an unconscious influence at work here.
All the ends did get tied together, in a very impressive way. I didn't love this book as much as Atonement, because--I'm sorry--the happy and fortunate Henry Perowne is a bit too smug to care about as much as I did the desperate and/or haunted characters of Atonement. But this was very good.
