Read about this in the paper and it just spoke to me (no, I'm not crazy...) The author has been acclaimed in the Sunday times for "extending the possibilities of fiction". Now that's something worth accomplishing.

Wow, I wonder what the paper said about this book. I found it very compelling but at the same time a bit irritating in its somewhat contrived style - Kathy (the narrator) would describe one event, then say "it all made sense when this next thing happened". So you'd feel compelled to read on, but know at the same time that you were being completely manipulated to feeling that way!! :) There is a deep sense of foreboding throughout the whole book which makes it haunting after you finish turning the last page.

I've seen comparisons with Atwood's "Handmaid's Tale" but I find that book more disturbing, because the world described in that book is more drastically removed from our current world. But maybe that should mean this is more disturbing because it is more likely to happen...

Reserved for goodthinkingmax cos I saw it on her wishlist.

Now, let's see, where to start?

I pounced on this book when I saw it released at a meetup/bookdrinks because I'd seen it on the Booker Shortlist for the year.

I had also heard of the author, but not read anything of his...until earlier this year when Iread 'The remains of the day'.

The book then wallowed on my bookshelf with many others.

I was then playing about on www.librarything.com and read a review for it, and then in a thread about 'The 1001 books you should read before you die'. Everyone raved about this book. Lots of 5 star comments. So, I shuffled Mt TBR and finally made time for it.

Thoughts?
Well, I read this several months ago now (and meant to journal it...) and while I found it starngely entertaining, the voice of Kathy got on my nerves. A whole book written as a backward looking conversation is a challange (I read 'The reluctant fundamentalist' earlier this year, which uses the same style too).

Alarming, thrilling and repulsive, the subject (when it is finally made clear - but I had read it earlier in a review, so perhaps it lost some of its impact) is that of an abused underclass. Could it ever happen like this though? Well, we like to think not...but...

One little thread made me smile though. The part about the students of the school looking back and wondering why they had had to learn and study these skills and subjects. Art, literature, science, etc. when they felt that it would never be applicable to them. How often have I heard that one!!

Hello algebra!

I am pleased to have read this amazing book, and the only misgiving I have is that unrelenting style of Kathy's narrative. I would just perhaps change that part way through the book. Otherwise, an amazing read.

And as such, I entered this book on the www.bookobsessed.com Virtual Book Box for '1001 books', to keep it moving. Wetje (spelling) in The Netherlands has selected it, so off to a new reader with you book!

Thank you for sharing Hunyb.

I read this book back in March for my book club and am just now getting around to journalling it. Two-year-olds are an even bigger time suck than the internet.

Overall I liked the book, but it was a bit disconcerting. The whole premise was bizarre and yet not unbelieveable. I really didn't understand why they main characters were so docile with no instinct for survival. I suppose if you are bred for harvest then that is the fact of life. I would have certainly thought they would have done a runner though.

I can't make up my mind whether to read another Ishiguro or not. This one was my second and though I give the book high marks, I didn't particularly like the characters in either of the books that I read. We shall see...
