Journal Entry 1 by Feryl from Coffs Harbour, New South Wales Australia on Sunday, April 24, 2005
"A dazzling novel in the most untraditional fashion, this is the remarkable story of a passionate love affair that endures across a sea of time and captures the two lovers in an impossibly romantic trap."

This is the most enjoyable book I've read in years! I came home from work one afternoon, opened a bottle of wine, and spend the ENTIRE evening on the sofa reading, pausing only for toilet breaks, to get something to eat, or to top up my glass. I haven't had such an indulgent, enjoyable "ME" evening in a very long time! I have a bit of a fascination with time-travel, and I loved how the author played wth the possibilities. Some great characters, too. Being a Violent Femmes fan and having seen them play last time they were in Sydney, I LOVED the bit at the Femmes gig.

Thanks so much Feryl! I have heard so much about this book and have been dying to read it. I can't wait to get home and start it. Will pass it on to littlemave when I am done.

Journal Entry 4 by 5478 from Melbourne CBD, Victoria Australia on Monday, May 23, 2005
This was such a great book. I wasn't sure with the first couple of chapters, but I soon got my head around it and then I couldn't put it down. So nice to read an original story! Highly reccomended.

Journal Entry 5 by Littlemave from Weston, Australian Capital Territory Australia on Saturday, June 18, 2005
Thanks 5478 and feryl. I have heard about this book, and I also like time stories.
This may languish on my shelf for a while as currently I do not have a lot of time to read, and have a bookring to start too...

PS Nice idea for the T-bags, 5478!
More Darjeeling Mrs Nesbitt?

Journal Entry 7 by Littlemave from Weston, Australian Capital Territory Australia on Wednesday, October 19, 2005
This was mindbendingly brilliant - quite literally. *g*

I admired the concept of Henry's time travel being an illness that could be triggered by stress, depression etc. And the first time that Henry met Clare was quite funny and amazing especially looking from the end of the book, knowing the history that Clare has but he is (in that present time) totally bereft.
It took me a little while to get into the rhythm of the book and initially I spent a fair bit of time flicking pages back and forth to see where and when (and how old) the characters were all the time! After a while I settled into it and loved it.

This has to be my bestest most fantastical book for this year, and I am still asking myself "why did I leave it on my shelf for so long?"! I had heard *of* the book, but nothing *about* it, and I was very pleasantly surprised. Amazing that it is a first novel, I wonder how she will follow it up...
(A film, a film!!!)

This book has no organised future [The future is not set. There is no fate but what we make for ourselves...] I may put it up for grabs on BCAus Yahoo Group.

After the raving reviews I just had to join this bookring. Looking forward to read this. Thanks Littlemave for organising this bookring.

Journal Entry 11 by dolphin-au from Lake Macquarie, New South Wales Australia on Monday, November 7, 2005
I am glad I joined this bookring, because I would have missed out on one of the best books I have read this year!
I thought the book was both really clever and touching, things that don't often go together. I had the urge to read back now and then to see if things really did fit as nicely as the story suggested, but I didn't because it could have spoiled the story. There are some minor glitches, but they are easily forgiven. I wonder how this author ever is going to follow up on this book. It is hard to see how she could emulate her success with this book.

I must say that one of the joys of this book was that part of it was set in scenes very similar to what I experienced, and I don't come across that very often in books I read.

Journal Entry 12 by Feryl from Coffs Harbour, New South Wales Australia on Tuesday, November 8, 2005
A few people have been wondering how Ms Niffenegger would follow up her amazing debut... When we had a mini-meetup recently there were 5 of us (4 girls and 1 boy) chatting about this book. The boy mentioned off-handedly that he'd heard she'd recently released a new book... well, that got our attention! All four girls' heads whipped around and we demanded to know more. Unfortunately, that was about all he knew, so I went and Googled the author, and found the new book... and a rather unusual one it looks, I must say! To see what the Amazon website has to say about it, click here.

Journal Entry 14 by xoddam from Springwood, New South Wales Australia on Thursday, November 17, 2005
Received in a large bag of books from dolphin-au, with a lovely postcard of dolphins (and another of Southhampton, which has maybe been travelling with one of the books). Many, many thanks to dolphin-au for sending it and to Feryl for getting it in the first place and to Littlemave for starting the ray.

Top of Mt TBR, for as soon as I finish Bettany's Book.

Journal Entry 15 by xoddam from Springwood, New South Wales Australia on Tuesday, November 22, 2005
Reading the final chapters was like watching a train wreck in slow motion; inexorable disaster keeps on rushing towards you for ages and there's nothing, nothing you can possibly do to help. Blinking away tears of grief at 1am, I tried to phone my brother in Germany. No-one home, so I could only leave a message saying you *must* obtain and read this book.

Blew me away.

I have PMed blakkat-BNE for her address -- and sent it. Normally I 'release' books I send by post, but this one seems never to have been 'in the wild' despite having been posted numerous times, so I'll keep it that way.

Journal Entry 16 by blakkat-BNE from Brisbane, Queensland Australia on Monday, November 28, 2005
Arrived yesterday (28/11/2005). Thanks to xoddam for sending this on :) My boyfriend picked it up last night and read the back and now wants to read it so he's going to make a start on it now and I'll read something else from Mt TBR.
btw - thanks for the extra goodies too, Jonathan :)

***UPDATE*** 05/12/2005 Silly boy forgot to take it with him so I've now started reading it instead.

Journal Entry 17 by blakkat-BNE from Brisbane, Queensland Australia on Sunday, December 18, 2005
I finished reading this book on the weekend. The focus of this book was definitely on relationships rather than the time travelling aspect though the time travelling did add an interesting twist to the whole thing. I thoroughly enjoyed this book - I laughed, I cried and could not be distracted from it whilst reading it. I will definitely have to look up the author's new book. I'm very glad I signed up for this one (even though I forgot I had *sheepish look*). bookworm-BNE is in no rush for this book, as she's currently living under the shadow of Mt TBR so I'm going to give it to my boyfriend to read first and then pass it on :)

Journal Entry 18 by Littlemave from Weston, Australian Capital Territory Australia on Sunday, December 18, 2005
I have to admit to reading the final pages sitting in the middle of a busy shopping centre, hankie in hand, and tears streaming down my face..... I just couldnt *not* read it!

Delivered by Blakkat-BNE a couple of days ago. Will attempt to read this before the next Brisbane lunch and deliver to aleonblue at the lunch.

Journal Entry 21 by bookworm-BNE from Brisbane, Queensland Australia on Wednesday, January 4, 2006
What an absolutely beautiful love story. Enjoyed this very much, a bit of a mind bender at times trying to figure out who knew what when, etc.
Like several previous readers I found the end almost too much, so beatiful and sad and inevitable. Lucky I'm home alone at the moment, the dog doesn't mind me crying and I managed to finish it in time to look 'normal' (ie not too red-eyed and puffy) in time for a friend's arrival at 8am.
What a treat, thanks for sharing, this is a serious contender for the best book of 2006 ;) It is also the only one so far, but that will be addressed shortly.
Handing this over to aleonblue at the next Brisbane BC lunch nest weekend.

Journal Entry 22 by aleonblue from Brisbane, Queensland Australia on Sunday, January 15, 2006
Picked up at the January Brisbane BC meet-up from Bookworm-BNE. Looks foward to reading this one.

Journal Entry 23 by aleonblue from Brisbane, Queensland Australia on Tuesday, January 31, 2006
Certainly an interesting premise and an interesting read. I loved the to-ing and fro-ing between the different time zones and ages of Henry & Clare, and the explanation of Henry's ability to time-travel and his attempt to find out more about why he could do it. Clare was certainly an intersting and strong character in her ability to deal with Henry's continual coming and going. The author did a great job of adding events or clues throughout the book and bringing them back in at a later time.

It looks like this author has written a couple of other books which would be worth a look at.

This book is certainly a well-worn and well-read book, so I hope it can last the distance of the bookring!

Thanks to all for sharing the book.

Received today, thanks aleonblue! Will get to it ASAP.

Journal Entry 25 by buggyhare from Brisbane, Queensland Australia on Monday, March 13, 2006
I found this gripping – it was too big to read in one sitting, but I read it in two! I loved her new take on time travel. Unlike other readers I found something about it unsatisfying – and I wasn’t moved by the ending, it was so unsurprising. I mustn't be as romantic as the other readers on this bookray! And all of Clare's waiting annoyed me. Still, quite an achievement for a first novel! I have bookfairy65's address and will post it off today. Thanks for the bookray!

Journal Entry 26 by bookfairy65 from Yass, New South Wales Australia on Sunday, March 19, 2006
This landed on my doorstep this morning, thanks to all who have held this book before me for sending it on. I can't wait to read this one...it looks fabulous.

Journal Entry 27 by bookfairy65 from Yass, New South Wales Australia on Friday, March 24, 2006
Gorgeous story, just loved it! There's not much to say that hasn't already been said in the above journal entries. This truly is a fascinating and unique story. I wouldn't mind a sequel about Alba's life/travels, I think I'd like that.

I will contact Arrietty for her postal details and get this off to her ASAP.

Edited: Posted to Arietty 29th March.

Journal Entry 28 by Arrietty from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Friday, April 7, 2006
So sorry I forgot to journal that I received this book. I'm quarter for the way through and will journal when I'm finished, hopefully this weekend as it's cold and miserable and just right for a 'time travelling' book. Thanks for starting this bookring LittleMave and thanks to Bookfairy65 for posting it to me.

Journal Entry 29 by Arrietty from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Monday, April 17, 2006
I can't say this book moved me as much as others in this bookring (although there were parts of the book that I enjoyed immensely)- I know I'm in the minority as most reviewers have raved about the book. It intrigued me at first but then I felt it just didn't develop the depth and intensity to make it a 'great' novel. Clearly an interesting concept of time travel but disappointingly predictable.

The Time Traveller's Wife is a very cleverly crafted novel but I found it lacking in many ways. I'm afraid I got bored with the romance and the day to day trivia in the main characters' lives. Anything that was non time travelling-related was just padding and didn't differ that much from the challenges most couples face... Take out the time-travel elements and you have the same old love story - girl meets boy in unusual manner, faces lots of challenges from family and friends, girl loses boy with poignant postscript.

I found it hard to keep reading as I suspected I was going to be disappointed -I hoped all the threads would come together at the end and make some interesting and insightful point but this did not happen. The point of the book is that Love transcends Time and Space- not a very original idea.

I'll now contact magicjessnrach to send the book on its way.

Journal Entry 30 by Arrietty from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Saturday, April 22, 2006
MagicJessnrach has started a new job and is flat out so will pass on the bookring now. Littlemave can you PM me where you would like it to go next?

Journal Entry 31 by magicjessnrach from Flagstaff Hill, South Australia Australia on Wednesday, May 17, 2006
Received this today which was lovely as I am home with the flu and can actually devote some time to it. Thanks Littlemave for letting me have extra time to read it :)

Journal Entry 32 by grooble from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Saturday, June 3, 2006
I plan to read this quickly then return it to magicjessnrach to continue the bookring.

Journal Entry 33 by grooble from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Tuesday, June 6, 2006
I started reading it at 10 pm on the day I got it and finished around 5 am the next day. This is a wonderful book that I have one major quibble with, but here is not the place to discuss it. Thanks for the chance to read this convoluted and gripping piece of fiction!

(will get this back to the source soon)

Journal Entry 34 by xoddam from Springwood, New South Wales Australia on Thursday, June 8, 2006
This is *exactly* where you tell everyone what your quibble is, Grooble! The rest of us didn't hold back our opinions ... go on, share!

Journal Entry 35 by grooble from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Saturday, June 10, 2006
magicjessnrach - I hope you found this on your front doorstep this afternoon - we left it there around 2.30 pm...
My one major quibble with this book is that the main character is still holding down a job (why, after winning 8 million...) yet disappears for sometimes 10 days to a month, with no warning, and no explanation, for 15 years? Hmmm! and has a reputation for airing hiswilly in the stacks. This one part of the story jarred with me, but I could not put it down, and recommend it as a good read.

groobs.

Journal Entry 36 by magicjessnrach from Flagstaff Hill, South Australia Australia on Saturday, June 10, 2006
Thanks Grooble, it was where you left it :)

I share your major quibble. The lottery win was sort of glossed over and forgotten. I could have understood him holding down the job if his boss had known his "problem" but he didn't so it jarred.

Apart from that I loved the book. A fantastic read though the last third was a little tiresome at times. As a former artist who worked with paper, books and text I could really relate to Clare's artwork. I'm itching to see some of the author's art after reading about Clare's. Also the end made me cry which is always a good recommendation as far as I'm concerned.

Pming Littlemave to find out the lucky mystery bcer!

Journal Entry 37 by magicjessnrach from Flagstaff Hill, South Australia Australia on Saturday, June 17, 2006
Sent today to the mystery recipient. I realised when I returned home I had forgotten to put the beautifully penned note explaining that this book must be read in the package. Sorry Littlemave.

Journal Entry 38 by wingSkyringwing from Reid, Australian Capital Territory Australia on Thursday, June 22, 2006
Well, this was a surprise and no mistake! I dimly remember expressing an interest in this book years ago. Well, months, maybe.

And so, just as Bookczuk finishes Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver in her log cabin in the Georgia mountains, and I take up BK's Poisonwood Bible, this one plomps into my mailbox with a hefty and well-worn thump.

Well-worn, well-read, well-loved.

So. I've two great books to read in the next few days.

Well now. Littlemave may have picked her mark with her usual unerring accuracy. Aimed her trim and tip-tilted nose right at me. Knowing me far too well.

Without giving anything away but the book, may I ask the existing readers, especially Feryl, who presumably pulled this book pristine off the shelves of Angus and MacRobertson, whether they would mind if it went off on its own quest now?

Not on a wild release, oh no, but more in the nature of a further journey among BookCrossers without fresh input from those who have already shared.

Journal Entry 39 by Littlemave from Weston, Australian Capital Territory Australia on Thursday, June 22, 2006
Oh, dear Skyring! What a turn of phrase you have, or should that be turn of nose..?

You are the end user, so you have the luxury of deciding where this brill book goes next. I would be very happy to see it continue to travel through our fab community and touch more lives.

Personally I think about this story quite a lot [for a book which I read many moons ago that is fairly unusual] which cannot be bad. I await postcards from the ether...

Journal Entry 40 by wingSkyringwing from Reid, Australian Capital Territory Australia on Thursday, June 22, 2006
I'm purely loving this book! What a great concept! In fact I went to sleep earlier and found myself dreaming that I was reading it. I could see the words right there on the page, they just didn't seem to be carrying the narrative further.

OK. It looks like I'll carry the narrative further.

Journal Entry 41 by wingSkyringwing from Reid, Australian Capital Territory Australia on Friday, June 23, 2006
Perhaps I cry too easily for people I've never known. These aren't even real people and the whole thing is science fiction.

Nevertheless, I find that I'm spilling down my cheeks.

As you can probably tell, I've just finished the book. In fact, I could probably stand to read it again, knowing what I know now, because I am sure that there are little snippets that I'd pick up on a second reading.

Thank you, my BookCrossing friends, for putting this book into my hands. I've enjoyed it, reading it through the night and getting to know these wonderful, loving characters. 'Scuse me while I wipe my eye.

Journal Entry 42 by Feryl from Coffs Harbour, New South Wales Australia on Sunday, June 25, 2006
Yes, Skyring, I'm happy for the book to continue travelling as far as it can! In fact I didn't acquire it brand new - it was given to me by my flatmate, who had adored it and was quite insistent that I must read it. She is an avid reader but doesn't have the time or the motivation to get into Bookcrossing. She's also quite a book hoarder so she doesn't like the idea of giving books away if she enjoyed them - I was jolly lucky (as were the rest of you!) that she actually gave me this one.

When I first released this book to 5478 and Littlemave I was new to Bookcrossing and didn't know about bookrings - so I've been a little bit jealous that Littlemave has got the credit for setting up this bookring! :o) But I've been very pleased, nevertheless, to see how much it has been enjoyed by so many people.

WHAT IS GOING ON?!? I THOUGHT WE HAD TAGGED THIS BOOK AS --NOT-- FOR WILD RELEASE!?

Well, it is too late to worry now, I just hope it is found by someone who appreciates it and continues its' travels.

Journal Entry 52 by wingSkyringwing from Reid, Australian Capital Territory Australia on Saturday, June 20, 2009
So long since I read this book! I bought another copy in Southport the other day, and now I'm reading it, and loving it, all over again. Some details popped into focus as I read it again, some details I'd forgotten. Yes, some niggles, and some plot holes, but I like the way time travel is presented. There's only one past, present and future, and you can't change the way things happened or are going to happen, except in the usual everyday fashion.

It's a love story, first and ever, and a good one. The time travel makes it more interesting, plotwise, but so often we see the same sort of devices used as flashbacks and flashforwards. I'm really enjoying this second reading, being able to sort things out. Plenty of "Aha!" moments as I work out what's going on. And some real teary-enjoyable moments with the punchlines. I liked it when Henry met Alba, for example - that was so well done.

If anybody wants a second reading, let me know, and I'll send this second copy off. Maybe deliver it in person - I'm off on another trip in a week.

This is one of those rare books that you buy at second-hand shops, just for the sheer pleasure of thrusting it into the hands of someone who hasn't read it yet. Here, you'll enjoy this!
