Wesley is an incredible writer - great on the flaws and nuances of everyone's character. Nobody is as kind as they would like to think to the neglected child Flora, who turns their lives upside down merely by being observant and pretty. The novel spans 40 years as the three men who make a play for her have their affairs worked out over time. I loved the protagonist's resourcefulness and just the wit of Wesley's writing.

Took me a long time to get round to reading this one, and it wasn't really worth the wait. There's a disturbingly paedophilic tone to the opening chapters, with a bunch of teenagers lusting over 10-year-old Flora, which put me off from the start. And no matter how bad her family situation, I can't believe she'd keep running back to a bunch of "friends" who consistently ignored her other than to occasionally treat her as a plaything, dropping her when they got bored again. The whole plot just made me think the author had some unresolved childhood crushes she was Mary-Janeing herself into a fantasy about.

On the plus side, I'm going to St Malo in a few weeks, where some of the key scenes of the book take place, so at least I can release it somewhere appropriate :-)

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

We made a special trip to Dinard (not from very far - we were staying across the bay in St-Malo) to release this book, because the main action takes place there.

Left on a ledge outside the casino.

Happy bookcrossing to the finder!
