A very easy and very quick read. Loads of fun as a couple come together, then grow apart and then start wondering if they shouldn't be together again. Mike Gayle somehow manages to crawl into the characters and make them so real...

On its way to Michelle1977 today. The bookring is still open for more people.

RELEASE NOTES:

What a great book! Just finished reading it an hour ago. It's an easy read and I really like Mike Gayle's style. I especially like the way he tells the story both from His and Her point of view and managed to make the female character so believable. Anyway, I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading more of his books.

Will be mailing it to blaisezabini12 tomorrow. And thanks Sublevel4 for making a Bookring out of this book!

Thank you Sublevel4 and michelle1977 for sending this book on its way to me:) I'll read as soon as I finish bridget jones: the edge of reason (100 pages left:)) and then send it to the next person on the list.

9 may 05 (evening!) - decided to start the book this evening and I was hooked on immediately - I'm already half way through the book and it is a lovely read.
I like the way in which the author uses different types of characters for Jim and Alison - it's easier for me to follow their story.
I must confess that one of my favorite characters until now is Disco:)

********SPOILER*************
I especially liked the ending - the fact that Jim didn't rush to spoil Alison's wedding and she made the decision for herself:)
*************SPOILER***********

I'll put the book in the mailbox this week - hopefully today or tomorrow.
Thanks for sharing it with me.

I'd (almost) forgotten this book was arriving.

I do have a few other books to read before this one, but if past experience is anything to go by this book will not take too long to read once I get started.

Journal Entry 8 by appletreen from Coalville, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Tuesday, June 7, 2005
I’ve maxed out on Mike Gayle books. They are all starting to blur into one book only with different names. Boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets another girl, boy gets original girl back. If I’m feeling particularly soppy I might feel the sting in my eyes before they well up but not with this book. I doubt it is the fault of this book as it is written in the same easy to read and enjoyable style. I liked the way Mike Gayle pulled of the writing as a woman and making her as believable as the man. Ben Elton could learn a thing or two from Mr Gayle. The only thing activate the tear ducts was the cats.

I’ll leave it a while before I read My Legendary Girlfriend as I’ll probably enjoy it more.

I will send the book on to rozenn hopeflly later today.

Received today. Thanks ! I'll read it as soon as possible.

Journal Entry 10 by Mostly-Harmless on Monday, June 13, 2005
I've read it this week-end - it was the perfect book for sunbathing !
I liked it a lot, like almost all Mike Gayle novel. I find his characters so ... normal that it's refreshing ! I also liked the two voices (his and hers...), but the end disappointed me a little.

I have cat02886's adress, so I'll mail it probably this week.

Today's Monday & this came in the mail Friday or Saturday. I'll start it in a few days & will send it out the beginning of next week. Thanks for letting me play, Sublevel!

Update: It's Wednesday now and I just started reading this morning. Everyone, be careful, possible spoiler is following. I could tell what was going to happen as soon as Allison started calling Disco to eat & he didn't come. Sigh. I hate things like this. It makes me want to pick my cat up & take her to the vet right now just to make sure that she's healthy.

BTW, to all other yanks, according to dictionary.com, brogues are 1. A heavy shoe of untanned leather, formerly worn in Scotland and Ireland. 2. A strong oxford shoe, usually with ornamental perforations and wing tips.

to be continued...

You know, I didn't like this story. I like Mr. Gayle's style of writing, there's no problem with that. However, this whole story... Frankly, I think Jim & Allison deserve to be together. I couldn't understand their initial attraction to each other, or why they wanted to continue a relationship, and then why they would even want to return to their relationship after experiencing freedom. Also, Jim is such a wuss. His way of breaking up leaves much to be desired. I couldn't believe how he broke up with whatsherface in the movie rental shop & then how he broke up his marriage later on, with no explanation. Jim needs to grow some ... never mind, maybe I shouldn't say that on bookcrossing!

Anyhow, PMd doris & this should be going out in the mail to her pretty soon.

10-3-2005: Going out in today's mail.

I finished this the other day and I did not get the chance to journal it. I enjoyed the story up until ***Spoiler*** Jim broke up his marriage. Then it was downhill from there. He sucked as I did not get why or his motives or anything. They were what I called "Overboiled" characters. Similar to vegetables when you cook them and boil them way to long. They lose all colouring and flavour. That is how I felt about these characters and the story in general.

Thanks for sharing! I will PM portable-solace.

Keep smilin!

The story of a relationship from first meeting until the end (or is it?) told in alternating viewpoints, back and forth between his story and her story.

This reminded me a bit of when my ex-husband and I separated and the night I was so tempted to call and say 'let's try again.' Any couple who have split up with some remaining tender feelings will hear something of their story in this book but I suspect most stories wouldn't turn out quite this way.

The author has developed a reputation as a man's confessional writer which explained to me why sometimes the woman's viewpoint didn't seem to quite ring right. On the other hand, his male character seemed a bit shallow; so much for his expertise.

Cleverly done however and overall worthwhile reading.

Mailing to HallieK 3/7/06.

Got this in the mail today and can't wait to read it! I'm in the middle of another one right now, but I think this one will be next!

I just adored this book. I started it in bed last night and just couldn't put it down. It was all I could do to make myself go to sleep! I keep thinking, "This is life." while I was reading. Gayle just seems to capture a relationship, the whole thing, all the litte parts of it, so well. And, it wasn't that whole fairytale relationship thing either....it was messy. I just loved the whole thing. I think I will certainly be checking out some of his other books. I love it when I take a chance on a book and it turns out to be wonderful! Thanks for sharing this one Sublevel4!

Journal Entry 24 by bc-del-20080226 on Wednesday, June 7, 2006
I just got this book in the mail today. I am behind by two rings at the moment...but this looks like a quick read, so I may bump this one first and try and finish it in a few days and get it on the way out.

Journal Entry 25 by bc-del-20080226 on Monday, June 12, 2006
Well this was an okay book....I didn't love nor did I hate it. It was predictable from the beginning what all was going to happen, so no surprises there. I did have a few chuckles here and there with the book. I loved the scene when he broke up with his girlfriend in the video store, that just cracked me up...typical guy thing to do, not right, but typical. I don't know if I will pick up more of this authors books in the future, but I wouldn't turn one down if it was placed in front of me either.

Time to send it away.
