Inside Hitler's Bunker
10 journalers for this copy...
An account of the last days of the Third Reich by a German historian who also addresses the issues of how it was possible for this 'sucessful gang leader' with 'all the tricks of a reckless streetwise Machiavelli' to seize power. Fest describes the claustrophobic atmosphere of the last days, when the leadership used all their energy in 'turning a disaster into a catastrophe'.

Received in post as part of bookring. Will start it once I've finished my current read.
I've just finished this after reading it in one sitting. It's not a book I would ever have thought to read if I hadn't seen Al Murray talk about it on Pageturners and it sounded interesting. I thought it was absolutely fascinating and extremely well written.
Thanks Mastulela for sharing.

This book arrived safely today and I look forward to getting into it.
Thanks very much to Mastulela for sharing it, and niccijl for forwarding it to me.
Updated: I have to agree with niccijl that I'd never have thought of reading it, but found it extremely interesting.
Updated again: Thanks, Mastulela, for suggesting I pass it direct to ToonFan to save postage. It will then go straight off to perfect-circle.

For me, this was additional information on a well-documented subject. I was most interested in the account of his rise to power, his relationship with his henchmen and his apparent hatred of the world - a world he was keen to destroy. What I learned from the book was that he certainly got pleasure from destruction.
Thanks to Mastulela, for sending the book on a ring, and suggesting that I read it while it was in our house.
We will be posting it off to perfect-circle today.

A very interesting account of Hitler's final days in the bunker and his attitude as it became clear that he had lost the war. Thanks Mastulela for sharing this.
Will be posting to KenseyRiver in the next couple of days.

This book arrived on Saturday. I finished it on Sunday. The complete lack of housework over the weekend is a testament to the unputdownable nature of this book.
Was interested to think about destruction being the Nazi's purpose, rather than a means to achieve another purpose. I enjoyed this book, but now want to know more. Think I shall try to read Fest's other book on Albert Speer as I am interested in how an architect could deal with all this destruction.
Thanks for sharing this book. Shall send it on to CoolboxUK

Received today - will be next in line on mount TBR...
I agree with the other journals that this was a compelling and quick read on an interesting subject. It gave a good insight into certain traits of Hitler's mind and the great influence his charisma, and the dogmas of National Sozialism, had on some others. Being German myself I did, however, feel that some of Fest's conclusions or historical findings were not really justified, or at least not in such a generalised way (I'm talking of ideas such as an inbred preponderance of death etc).
Caught this in the post this morning. I'm really looking forward to reading this book as I'm rather patchy on the 'Bunker Days' which is quite shameful. Thanks to Mastulela and Coolboxuk for sharing :-)
I've finally got round to finishing this book. I was suffering from a heavy cold halfway through reading it which meant I had to re-read certain parts.
I was surprised at how little is apparently know about Hitler's last few days. According to Fest it looks like it will be a subject of debate for many more years to come. I also enjoyed reading about how life was going on in Berlin. When discussing the effects WWII had on civilians, German and Japanese citizens are often left out of the equation. That good old myth of London Blitz spirit.
Anyway, this was an impressive account at attempting to accurately describe the last days of the Third Reich.
Off to Sunflowergirl when I get an address.
EDIT: 13/09/2005 I sent this off to sunflowergirl in the post yesterday.

I received this book in the post this morning, thanks. I'm looking forward to reading it but unfortunately it is joining a small queue, I have one book ring book to read before I get to this one. It shouldn't take me too long to get to it though.

I finished this book last night, it was definitely an "unputdownable" book. I discovered quite a few things in this book that I didn't already know about Hitler and the war, it's a subject that I have read a lot about over the years and this book added more detail to my knowledge. I like that the author was honest in acknowledging that no one really know for sure what happened in the bunker but that he's put together the most likely story based on witness testimony. I guess we'll never know for sure what happened. The book was well-written and I'm glad I had a chance to read it.
Thanks for sharing it with me.

Arrived this morning. Looking forward to reading this one.
I really did enjoy this one. I have just looked through the previous journal entries and see that someone mentioned the book was reviewed on Page Turners. I had forgotten that, but intend to watch the DVD of the programme again. This was certainly one of my top 20 for the year. Thanks for sharing.
I have Mastulela's address, so the book is heading home! In the post on 24th Oct.
