This was not at all what I was expecting, but interesting nonetheless. "Brokeback Mountain' vividly evoked a whole new harsh terrain. It is the story of the relationship between two cowboys, spanning decades of marriages, affairs, and kids; keeping up appearances and never needing to say to each other how they feel. There's a brutality and a bitterness in the world Jack and Ennis live in, but there are touching moments in this story.

Thank you, Madam Muck for sending this.
I love Annie Proulx and had not read this one yet. A lovely slim volume perfect for my handbag then I think it will come to Canada with me to be passed on to my best friend.

I knew that would happen. I couldn't wait to finish the other book I"m reading before reading this one. It is really a novella so was finished yesterday and I'm still thinking about it.

Without a doubt Annie Proulx is the strongest writer I've ever read.
This book reaffirms that for me.

I wonder if a man could have written this any truer. These two cowboys are within such a strong relationship yet so completely detach themselves from the idea that it is homosexual. She finished the book with a sentence I think everyone needs to accept in their lives at some point...
"There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it."

Phew! What a read. Many thanks MadamMuck for sending this book out there.

I thought I would offer this as a bookring before the movie comes to Australia. there has been much controversy in America over the fact that two hetrosexual actors played the parts and what this movie may do for their careers. I'd love to hear what others thoughts are on this story.

Bookring participants (closed now, sorry):

Wow! A tiny book with a big impact. Explores the divide between what you think you want, what you really want and what you think you have. Really evocative, haunting writing.

Sending to cosmic-gin as soon as I receive the address. Thanks for sharing this, MadamMuck!

Received today from hunnyb, quick delivery hey?! Was surprised at how thin the book is (58 pages) so it will definitely be a quick read! Looking forward to it :)

Definitely different to what I was expecting - but clever all the same. First time I've read something so compact, direct and in your face, without all the of in-depth scenery descriptions that go on an on .. ha! I liked it! Since the book is only 58 pages in length it did feel a bit rushed, so I don't think the characters where explored or understood completely. But it does leave powerful lessons about facades, time, regret, guilt and love! And most importantly, we only have one life to live – so we must be true to ourselves. Otherwise you end up living someone else’s life (a false life) and will never be happy or content. A small book that packs a big punch. Can't wait to see the movie now!

A nice little one that I will try to get through this week - just finished another book this morning so well timed getting this to me now :)

Edited for comments: Well this tiny little book certainly packed a lot of punch in. Read this last night between TV viewing and thoroughly enjoyed it - very emotional. With all the hype around the film I'd been put off going to see it but now I think I will, if only to see how they extend the story into a full-length feature :D With Ang Lee as director I'm sure it's turned out well.

Will get this in the mail to c-a-m on Monday - I'm hoping you enjoy it as much as I did.
