As the blurb warns: this is NOT a cookbook, more a hilarious collection of illustrations of what people once thought good food should look like.

Mind you, things haven't changed a lot. Have you seen the Burger King ads showing their idea of a scrumptious meal?

What an utterly lovely surprise! A book by the man who made one of my very favourite websites.
Mike, I don't know how you did it, but this book is 'helemaal in de roos'. It's going to be here for a while.

What better diversion could I wish for than a book full of 'liberties taken with peas' and 'jellied tongue entrapped in quivering aspic'? Very well timed. Thanks, Moem!

For me also this hilarious book shows up on time for some distraction. Thank you Moem for ringing and MaaikeB for sending it to me.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand it is a nice, laughable, delicious book with sharp observations about old-fashioned food. Very recognisable. On the other hand I got bored after reading another and another of his jokes.
I think this is a book to have on your bookshelves and peek in it so now and then.

Moem, thanks for ringing. It's going in the mail to Frakke-Per today.

As Joanazinha wrote, this seems a book to peek in to every now and then. So I place it on my table and I will browse through it once in a while. The first glances already made me grin: jelly, jelly, jelly!
Thanks for sending me this book.

*grins* Received it at the meeting in Castricum/Bakkum. Have already leafed through it and it made me grin. I will have much trouble to ignore this one, as I really need to read some other ringbooks first.

2 out of 10

Thank you, Phoenix! I was reminded straight away of the horrible white sauce my mother used to hide food under. This is going to be fun.

I like this! The text is over the top (overdone?) but digestible if taken in small doses. And the illustrations are really amazing. Part of the fun was a trip down memory lane, of course, but I still wonder if I have ever eaten such food..
