Blackberry Wine - BOOKRAY
7 journalers for this copy...
Chocolat with wine. And a different story. But sensual in the same way as Chocolat.
I want to read it again, so I'm creating a ring rather than releasing it.

Journal Entry 3 by redjanet from Bromley, Greater London United Kingdom on Saturday, August 13, 2005
I received this in the post today. Thanks, nut! I have a couple of books to get through so it might take a little while to get to this one, but I'm looking forward to it.
This is my third and least favourite novel I've read by Joanne Harris so far. The plot felt tired and cliched, she doesn't write male characters very well and there were a lot of, what I thought were pretty major plot points, left unresolved. Harris is always very readable but although I stayed with this one until the end, I felt like I wasted my time when I could have been reading something better.
I've contacted rainbow3 who is next on the list for the ring. Once I have her address I will post the book to her.

I liked the ‘magic’ here, I liked Harris’s writing as ever but I didnt like Jay’s utterly self centred introspection, I wanted too like him more. Though why should I require to like the central character so much. Or in fact maybe I did like the central character if I consider Joe in that position. I think there are twin themes here of neglect and its repercussions then nurture and growth. Jay’s neglect by his mother, his mother’s neglect by his father, Jays neglect of Kerry, Marise’s deliberate neglect of her relationship with her neighbours then Joe’s nurturing of his garden and also of Jay, and Jays subsequent restoration of the chateau garden and the inadvertent effect on Marise and her daughter’s life. The biggest bit of magic I thought was Jay’s discovery of the six bottles of ‘special’! What extraordinary luck. Equally curious, oops no, time to stop before I give away too many spoilers.

I received this a few weeks back from rainbow3 but didn't journal it. I'm about finished now and am going to PM luintaurien for a mailing address. Soon to be journaled!
3/27/06: PMed luintaurien for mailing address and finished the book. Waiting to mail.
I liked the creative approach to the book...a story told by a bottle of wine...but I think I agree with one of the previous readers that Harris didn't do an extremely convincing job of writing a man's story. The setting for the story is fabulous and I appreciated the tension portrayed in the story regarding development of small towns.
