Quite an interesting read...I couldn't put it down and basically read it all in one sitting. (There went my productive Sunday!) I had just finished a book about a lady who grew up in the bush of Australia so there were parts of this story that I found interesting because I could compare survival tactics. I got very caught up in this story...but I think I would have liked to see a little more character development.

From the flap:
With the sure hand and unerring eye of a mature artist, Silko takes the reader on a Grand Tour of England and Europe in the era of Henry James (in a novel peopled with characters whose sensibility and language are brilliantly Jamesian), as seen through the eyes of a young Native American girl, Indigo, who is in flight from the destruction at the hands of the whites of her own tribal world.

This book has been languishing on my bookshelf for far too long. I did make a couple of attempts to read it, but just could not get into it. Therefore, I feel it is time to move it along to another reader.

Cleared the PO Box and a parcel was awaiting. The NZPOST staff member queried why it was addressed to lytteltonwitch and what it meant. She got a quick explanation of bookcrossing.

I was very pleased to find a book on the "Recommended Reads" table at the 2009 World BookCrossing Convention that had been registered by Alrescate. Picked it up for no other reason than that then when I started to read it and found that a central character was a Native American, a subject I'm interested in, I was doubly pleased.
It will likely be a while before I get around to it as I did bring home other books, I made a brief start in a quiet moment before the convention began in earnest and it looks most interesting.

I have had this book on my special blackwood bookcase for far too long before I decided it should stop languishing and earn its shelf space which it certainly did. Why did I wait so long? It was a truly fascinating story raising lots of issues in my mind especially the harsh and inhumane treatment of Indians.
Indigo, a member of an indigenous clan called the Sand Lizard People, is aged around eleven, a very self-possessed young person in many ways. When she became separated from her family I was saddened and wondered about the chances of her ever settling again. She forms a close relationship with both a parrot that rides on her shoulder and a small monkey but all the time as she travels with the Palmers she focuses on returning home.
I found Hatties' husband, Edward, an interesting character with his intrepid pursuit of botanical specimens. Having spent a number of years collecting orchids that part of the book was very special to me. The descriptions were very realistic and familiar to me.
The more ethereal influences, the Goddess imagery and appearances of the Ghost people required me to suspend belief some of the time.
I could go one for hours but won't. Suffice it to say that it was a great read that I could thoroughly recommend.

Released 12 yrs ago (10/7/2011 UTC) at Upper Hutt, Wellington Province New Zealand

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Posting this afternoon if the showers stay away long enough.
Sending to the US to dear friend Deena - it looks like just the sort of subject that she would really enjoy. Do hope so. I'll be awaiting her JE with great interest. It certainly introduced me to a lot of information and new ideas, even though it did take a long time before I got around to reading it. Then I loved it.
