Uma surpresa no encontro na Quinta da Regaleira
A ser lido brevemente!
"Before he received due acclaim and an American Book Award for his comics-format journalism from Palestine (collected in Palestine, 2001) and Bosnia (Safe Area Goradze, 2000), Sacco toiled in alternative comics for a decade. The fruits of that labor are collected here.
Much of this early work is minor, though entertaining, including short satirical pieces, a lengthy chronicle of Sacco's days as roadie and resident cartoonist for a rock band touring Europe, and cynical reflections on his unhappy stint working in a public library.
Other pieces presage his mature, politically oriented work: a history of aerial bombing that targets civilian populations, the story of his mother's harrowing childhood experiences during the World War II bombing of Crete, and a mordant and, unfortunately, once-again relevant account of his increasingly distraught state during the lead-up to the Gulf War." I'm a bit torn about this book. On the one hand, I can see a bit of the Joe Sacco I know from Palestine in the stories about the aerial bombings and his mothers' tale in Malta. In these we can clearly see his political views, and learn a bit about the world at the time. On the other hand, some of his stories had such difficult layouts and art that I couldn't really understand the plot - it kind of looked like a psicotropic world.
I really liked one story, though: the one about the library is really funny, and I kept remembering my classes on the whole "books in demand" concept. :)
Thanks for another book, begmartins, I'll bring it back home next week!
[20/11/05] On it's way to Lisboa. Thanks fflloorr!!
