Really struggled with this one. Decided that it was not for me and moved on to another book. I feel a little guilty that I didn't give it a better chance, but there are so many books to read and so little time!

I really wasn't sure what to make of this book. It was like wading through treacle. The plot was simple, the writing was superb and the atmosphere was realistic and well-drawn. But there was something missing. I think it may have been the complete lack of any sympathetic characters (apart from perhaps the bullied RAF man). Briony was a spoiled brat, her brother and sister seemed to have had character-bypasses and even Robbie Turner's journey through northern France to Dunkirk just made you want him to get it over with (preferably in some corner of a foreign field...). The best thing about the book was the intelligence and economy of the writing - the author's ability to conjure feelings. I particularly liked when he was exploring Briony's attempt and failure to capture her own feelings in words - a writer writing about a writer's inability to express herself. Very clever.

I wasn't expecting much from the book after reading the reviews above...but I really enjoyed it! It didn't take long to read and I felt that the prose flowed well. I enjoyed reading about the young Briony and her writing, how she shared her plays and stories with her relatives and friends. I found the description of Robbie's retreat to Dunkirk realistic and gripping. I did find the last section of the book, written in Briony's old age, rather superfluous and not really in keeping with the rest of the book, and also I felt that the writer was trying to make more of a theme to do with romance than there really was, if that makes sense! But it was an enjoyable read.
