Journal Entry 1 by bookfairy65 from Yass, New South Wales Australia on Friday, April 01, 2005
I have heard plenty of good reports about this book, so I purchased it especially to be the 200th book I registered. I've noticed alot of people have it on their wish list, so when I get around to reading it I think I'll send it out as a ring.

Journal Entry 2 by bookfairy65 from Yass, New South Wales Australia on Thursday, April 07, 2005
I loved this book! It's a fabulous read...and I finished it way too soon. To quote from the back cover "Gave me that rare, greedy feeling of: This is so good I want to read it all at once but I mustn't or it will be over too soon". The story is about 15 year old Christopher, who suffers from Asperger's Syndrome. He discovers a 'murdered' dog, decides to investigate who killed it and writes a story about it. I found this book particularly interesting because a friend of mine has a son with Asperger's. I was amazed at the similar behavioural traits between him and Christopher. I am starting a bookring with this book, PM me to join.

It was interesting & informative but I didn't really enjoy it. What a world to live in with no coping mechanisms. Unlike the quote on the back, I just couldn't wait to get it over with, but I'm glad I have read it. Off to Mistlerose on Monday.

Journal Entry 12 by Saki from Melbourne, Victoria Australia on Saturday, July 02, 2005
I had heard good things about this book, but I was alittle disappointed in it myself. I hadn't realised it was in the 'for younger readers' genre. This in itself would not prevent me from enjoying a book, but in this case I felt the book was limited by the characteristics of that genre and the plot was rather formulaic. It wasn't all bad though. The characterisation of Christopher was interesting. Although he has a poor understanding of human emotions and social interaction, he also has an acute understanding of the way the world works in other ways; for example, he assumes that anyone would come to the big bang theory if they just bothered to think about how the universe was formed. Mark Haddon has Christopher state early in the book that he doesn't like jokes because they don't make sense (the way, for example, maths makes sense). But Haddon then goes on to draw alot of gentle humour from the gaps between Christopher's 'detective' work and the 'real' state of affairs which is becoming apparent to the reader. One quibble I had with the characterisation was that for someone who supposedly had a poor understanding of psychology and emotions, Christopher probably had too good an insight into his own condition at times. But, I put this down to the author's need to explain certain things to the reader. Thanks for the opportunity to participate in the bookring, Bookfairy65. I have pmed amberc and will send the book on to her when I receive her address.

Wow, what a great book!! It's interesting to see things through Christopher's eyes, rather than focusing on his parents. I love how he blocks things out with maths, but I feel for him because he can't understand the love his parents have for him. I almost cried when he found the letters!! Reserved for tobysrus.

Definitely the best book I have read year-to-date! Very engrossing....once you pick it up you can't put it down. Unique telling the story as a 15 year old autistic boy. Highly recommend!
