4 out of 10

I read this novel for a seminar and was irritated by the eagernes with which the 20-something-year-old women in my class defended the adulterous main male character.

Wow! Nordseeboy caught this book for me because he thought I might like it! :-) I hope he's right! Wonder when I'll be able to read this one... if I don't make it in time, I'll have to release it without reading, but let's see! :-)

6 out of 10

It's not only slightly embarrassing how long I kept that book here, but in my defense I have to say that student's life (at the beginning of my BC career) is not the same as work life (shortly after I caught the book). Still, I finally managed to read it, so here we go:

Whoever voted this for the British Book Awards? What are the BBA anyway?? This book is simply boring, even though unforeseeable because the two people ending up together in the end (well where else...) don't really seem to get along together very well to say the least. They simply don't seem to belong together - and isn't that what romance novels are all about? It really feels as if Harry just takes the next best person and decides that this is his last chance. Not so impressive. Apart from that there's simply nothing interesting or outstanding in it. Most CHICKLIT shows more variation in plot! I can't lose the feeling that somebody (namely Tony Parsons...) tried to jump onto the success train of Hornby's "About A Boy", but he forgot that that book is not only about the relationship between men and boys but has also some funny aspects in there.

Apart from that... well, I wouldn't want to defend the male protagonist, but I can also only understand Gina's... let's face it... overreaction because her upbringing was explained later on. But how strange of her to end up with a married man because her soon-to-be ex-husband had a one-night-stand. Somehow that made her lose every credibility in my eyes, really. It makes her sound as if she, very similar to Harry, just waited for the next chance to get rid of him and that's it.

Sorry, when work gets too hard, I'm all in for a little light reading, but this one was just too shallow. Still happy to be able to finally pass this on! :-)
