This was excellent. I didn’t exactly enjoy it, because I find it distressing reading a book when I sense from the very start that bad things are going to happen, but it is extremely well-written and full of ideas. The evocation of place and time is brilliantly done. But it’s the clever and surprising ending that really makes it. It casts the rest of the book in a whole new light and makes you question everything that has gone before and I really didn’t see it coming. It left me with lots to think about and I like that a lot.
