PB-
Meet Ella Turner and Isabelle du Moulin - two women born centuries apart, yet bound by a fateful family legacy. When Ella and her husband move to a small town in France, Ella hopes to brush up on her French, qualify to practice as a midwife, and start a family of her own. Village life turns out to be less idyllic than she expected, however, and a peculiar dream of the color blue propels her on a quest to uncover her family's French ancestry. As the novel unfolds - alternating between Ella's story and that of Isabelle du Moulin four hundred years earlier - a common thread emerges that unexpectedly links the two women. Part detective story, part historical fiction, The Virgin Blue is a novel of passion and intrigue that compels readers to the very last page.

9 out of 10

It was a great book on travelling. Sometimes, it was a bit too esoteric for my taste, but always the story went back to normality. I loved the idea of having 2 narrators, it added something special to this otherwise conservative novel. As usual, Tracy Chevalier is a good writer and her stories are intriguing.

Thank you so much BusyBookLover for fulfilling this wish !!!

An interesting read. I have generally enjoyed Tracy Chevalier's books. The Lady and the Unicorn remains my favorite, but this is a close second.

Edited to add the picture Ella sees in the Toulouse museum. I love when history in fiction books is also real. :)

This, along with another book, was strangely returned from Portugal as undeliverable. I contacted fio-dagua and this is her response.

"i'm sorry to hear that, it must have arrived when i was in hollidays!.. i think that probably the best thing to do now is for you to release in the wild those ones. anyway, thanks a lot for sending!"

I'm not good at wild releasing, but I will try to give it a special home. :)

9 out of 10

This was a really beautiful book. I enjoyed it a lot. Tracy Chevalier knows how to veawe a story and make her historical characters alive. Last summer I spent some time in France and Switzerland so it fun to read about Ella's experiences there.

Thanks Lauraloo29 for organising this ray.

Edit 3.11.06: Mailed the book today. Happy reading Hetku77!

8 out of 10

As usual, Tracy Chevalier didn't disappointed me.
I loved the stories of Ella and Isabelle.
Didn't know much about Calvin or the Huguenots, maybe because in that century Portugal was discovering brave new worlds in Africa and South America and the Catholic religion still is very strong here. So, I loved, also, the History beyond the story... And a note to say that I'm also La Rousse! (see the picture?)

Thanks, lauraloo29, for sharing.
It will go to the next reader this week.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I enjoy Tracy Chevalier stories so much. I have been to France several times and have been working on where and why a generation of my family left France to the Netherlands. Reading it gave me more food for thought.

Put in the mail to Caligula03.

The lengthy over-written flashbacks with Isabelle detract from the rest of the book. I hated her half of the book. While I found myself compelled to read Ella's story, I didn't especially like her as a character.

28.5.2007 The book arrived to me for the second time. Thank you, caligula03!

26.4.2010 The first book I've ever read by Chevalier, but certainly not the last. This was really enjoyable to read and I liked both Isabelle's and Ella's stories. The historical aspect is always a bonus in my opinion :).
