**THIS IS A BANNED BOOK AND THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO READ IT**

Bought for the BC-SAT yahoo group banned book project. We are a group of San Antonio area Bookcrossers who are reading a "banned" book a month, then are releasing it to give YOU a chance to try it on.

This is my second banned read-and-release, and will be finishing it by the end of April.

'til then, this is TBR.

7 out of 10

2005/24

7 1/2 stars.

Hmmm, this was a banned book? I can't figure out why. It's a Newberry Award Winner and everything. It's written for tweens and teens, but I thought it was rather satisfying, even for an adult.

This is the coming of age story of Timmy Meeker, set in and around 1776, in and around colonial Conneticut. Timmy's Tavern-keeping family lives in a mostly Loyalist town. But the elder brother, Sam, has become a soldier for the Rebellion.

The family suffers hardships from the war and Timmy is forced to grow up quickly. As you can probably guess from the title, following hardship, comes terrible tragedy. Actaully, even more so than you would guess from the title.

The last chapter is very poignant, and I think really drives home the point of the price our fore-fathers paid for the freedoms we enjoy today. I think there important messages in these pages and I do recommend this book.

I'd put this book on a list of oft-banned books from the list at the ALA website. Thanks to choc for leaving this in my mailbox yesterday morning!

It looks like it could be a fast read, so maybe I'll pick it up over the weekend and breeze through it. :)

2005 Book #21: My Brother Sam Is Dead by James Lincoln Collier & Christopher Collier

Every once in a while I like to read a book despite it being in the Teen or "Young Adult" category. This one I wanted to read because it sounded like an interesting and timely story. It also intrigued me because it was listed as an oft-banned books by the ALA.

Written from the point of view of Tim Meeker during the Revolutionary War (or The Rebellion if you're English!), it tells an important story about the way life may have been in those days and the everyday hardships exacerbated by the cost of war.

Going by the title of the book I thought that Tim's brother Sam was going to die sooner and in a different way than he actually did. Because of this the book turned out to be a different type of story than I thought it would be. Like a critic said, it does a good job of assuming that children can think. It shows that in the past and in many places in this world still people are expected to mature at a much younger age and assume adult responsibilities much earlier than people in my country do. War makes that time come even sooner.

All in all a great story and I wish more adults would read this book and maybe come to fully understand the unglamorous effects of war.
