***HEY, THIS IS A BANNED BOOK! I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU NOT TO READ IT!***

SO WHAT ARE YOU ENTERING THE BCID HERE FOR?

I bought this book for the BC-SAT(Yahoo Group) Banned Books Project. We are a group of San Antonio Bookcrossers that have collectively decided to read at least one "banned" book a month, discuss it amongst ourselves, and then release it, to give YOU the opportunity to try it on.

This is my first banned book read-and-release, that was suggested by fellow Bookcrosser,Synergy. Thank you, Synergy, I wouldn't have known of this book or it's writer without your suggestion. For some reason, when I was a teen, I wasn't even aware of these "teen" books...I guess my head was already too far stuck up in Piers Anthony, Issac Asimov and Robert Heinlein. Nevertheless, this book was so good, I'm going to look into more books by Duncan, as she writes satisfyingly enough for adults as well. I see here she is the author of the now famous I Know What You Did Last Summer, too.

This is primarily the story of New Mexico teen, Sue McConnell. She's the stereotypical smart but frumpy student, who is looking to get away from her noisy clan of a family, and to be more accepted by her peers. It is also the story of three other "regular" teens: Betsy the cheerleader, Jeff the jock, and Dave the ultra-responsible, who come under the influence of a sociopath, Mark. All these teens have trouble one way or the other with their overly tough English teacher Mr. Griffin. They take it upon themselves to "teach him a lesson". But this prank ends up going oh-so-wrong, and the entire plot snowballs into so much death and destruction. The psycological pressures evident on all involved was well done, and the author made the unravelling of the lies so natural and easy, leaving little cliffhangers at the end of chapters driving you to read on. I know a book is good when I can see the screenplay of it playing out in my minds eye just like this. (As a matter of fact, doing a little research revealed this was actually made into a movie in 1997, but apparently it was just awful.)

The only drawbacks of this book were that it was written in 1978 -- obviously a much more innocent time. This book wouldn't be written today, because today's teens are savvy enough to know full well they could never hope to get away with this kind of stunt scott-free, the way our happy-go-lucky foursome thought in the beginning. Today, kids DO go around killing their teachers and should expect to get persecuted to the full extent of the law for a thing like that. Also, these guys were free from the fears of CSI style-evidence from impacting them. Aside from that, I also thought that, though the dialogue from kids flowed perfectly smootly, for some reason when it came from the adults/parents, it seemed a little stilted. Or maybe that's the way they actually talked in '78; it was a pretty bizarre era.

Now you know I took the chance on reading it and I lived to tell the tale. Time for you to decide for yourself what you will do with it....

**BUT BE WARNED! THEY SAY THIS BOOK IS BAD FOR YOU!! IT IS FULL OF DISTURBING IDEAS AND IT COULD AFFECT THE WAY YOU THINK!**
