It's a great book, I read it ages ago & enjoyed it, but can't remember much of the plot, so here's the blurb from the back cover...

Welcome to paradise! The world is run by American corporations (except for a few deluded holdouts like the French); taxes are illegal; employees take the last names of the companies they work for; the Police and the NRA are publicly-traded security firms; and the U.S. government only investigates crimes it can bill for.

Hack Nike is a Merchandising Officer who discovers an all-new way to sell sneakers. Buy Mitsui is a stockbroker with a death-wish. Billy NRA is finding out that life in a private army isn't all snappy uniforms and code names. And Jennifer Government, a legendary agent with a barcode tattoo, is the consumer watchdog from hell.

This is going to Morseman , and will continue as a bookring!

I read this book in about two days, which tells me that I enjoyed it. :-)

It's set at quite a pace and, you have to say that it's a warning about what can happen to you after a meeting round the water cooler!

I've posted it onto the next person in the bookring.

Received safely in this morning's post. Thank you!

I loved this - wry, funny and with a serious satirical point to make. It's undemanding reading - I was slow at first only because I was preoccupied with other things, but the whole second half I read at a sitting.

On its way to semioticghost at the earliest opportunity.

Arrived today, literally minutes after I'd finished a previous bookring - your timing is impeccable, Rosie! PMing Tanya04 for her address now.

Set in a world ruled by corporations more than the increasingly powerless government, everybody takes on the name of the organisation they serve. Jennifer Goverment, the eponymous heroine, valiantly struggles to do The Right Thing while working to exact a spot of revenge on her ex, John Nike.
The National Rifle Association and the Police provide the firepower for a no-holds-barred competition between the only two Customer Loyalty Programmes left in existence after cross-industry mergers and things get ugly. Corporate politics, a real killer marketing campaign for the latest pair of trainers and some hapless idiots add light relief to the plot which bravely embraces the ridiculous along with the scarily plausible.

I couldn't seem to get past the first couple of chapters I'm afraid which is a pity because I've heard great things about this book. Maybe I'll try reading it again sometime in the future.

Will post to the next in line as soon as I receive an addy. Thanks nice-cup-of-tea.

Just got this in the post, thanks! - Fortunately I'm on holiday end of month so I can clear up all these ringed books... Apologies in advance for any delay. This book looks like just my thing, though.

Hilarious - and a quick read: finished it in one gloriously hedonistic, slumped on the sofa coz it's raining outside, sitting.
Wicked slapstick in a National Lampoonish sort of way, with wonderful baddies and a pretty cool heroine. Just don't forget to read the small print!
Thanks, nice-cup-of-tea XXX

Great book: easy to read, enjoyable and funny, but also makes you think. Could this really happen one day?
I loved the map of the world at the front and would be interested in a sequel (when Jennifer moves to Europe?!)
Will be posted off to Millycent tomorrow (probably surface, so it might take a while to get there).

Hi all, I thought I'd drop in here to tell you of the Jennifer Government UN-simulation game website, where we have a community of bookcrossers and their states. It's at :
http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/ and the passw0rd is 'unconvention'

The community has gone quiet for need of members, and it would be fun playing with you all - it's free, takes less than two minutes a day or maybe 15 minutes a week to join in, and they don't send you junkmail.

Journal Entry 18 by Millycent on Thursday, August 11, 2005
Book arrived safely, thanks Amanida...

Journal Entry 19 by nice-cup-of-tea from Zürich, Zürich Switzerland on Sunday, April 16, 2006
Bad news :-( Think this book is lost and gone. Millycent thinks she posted it at the end of 2005, so I reckon it's gone astray. Bit of a shame as this is the first bookring that hasn't arrived home. Never mind, hope you all enjoyed Jennifer....

Journal Entry 20 by lostbookisland on Sunday, September 24, 2006
This book has washed ashore at the Lost Book Island after not being heard from for many months. This new arrival will be shown to a room and be allowed a bit of rest before being introduced to the many fun things to do here at the island.

All around there are books sipping cool drinks under shady palms while other books participate in a wide variety of beach sports. There is plenty of sand, surf and sun here for all of the lost and wayward books to enjoy.

It is hoped that very soon a new journal entry will come to rescue this book from the island and send it back out into the BookCrossing world so that it may continue on its journey. It is hoped that the new journal entry will tell all the interested parties where this book has been this long time and where it will be traveling to next.
