I really enjoy Sarah Vowell's voice and this is a really great introduction to her style. This is a quick-reading collection of essays (mostly comic, but not all). My husband is finishing it off.

I think I liked the Partly Cloudy Patriot a little better than this one. Though I really identify (as much as I can, I suppose) with the following quote:

When I think about my relationship with America, I feel like a battered wife: Yeah, he knocks me around a lot, but boy, he sure can dance.
I think I started feeling like that before moving to Germany, and now, after having been here a year, the feeling has only intensified.

This sounds like a great read.
I agree with you cliff. I visited Africa for the first time in the Spring. I immediatley noticed how kind and thoughtful people were to eachother regardless of life's tough pull to always get ahead. You don't see that in the US. People will walk all over you, then kick you when your down at every opportunity in the US...
but there is something to be said for sound plumbing and never ending rolls of toilet paper...
