Journal Entry 1 by camis from Norwich, Norfolk United Kingdom on Tuesday, March 22, 2005
When Charles Callahan chances on a newspaper photograph of Sian Richards, a woman he loved when they were both only thirteen, he is hardly in a position to do anything about it. He has been faithfully married for years and his Rhode Island real estate business has been hard hit by the recession. But Charles cannot bear his curiosity and decides to get in touch.

Three decades after they last saw each other, the two lovers meet. Powerfully drawn together once again, Charles and Sian are forced to come to terms with the nature of erotic love and betrayel, moral quandries in an age of shifting values, and the elusive nature of time.

Another absorbing read from Anita Shreve - beautifully written as always. I did feel the ending let things down slightly though.

this was a really fast read, and i did it all in one sitting of just a couple of hours.

most of us probably have someone in our past we occasionally think of and imagine "what if...?". well, this book is an exploration of just such a possibility. i enjoyed pretty much all of the book, but i have to agree with the first journal entry that the ending slightly let down the rest of the story. i was annoyed at the character of sian for dithering so badly, and also at charles for believing her dithering so unquestioningly when she had already done it once earlier in the book then retracted it. a good read except for the annoying ending.

now on the way to purple-pixie from a bookrelay.com YBS (at least i think it was a YBS - it was so long ago i cant remember!)
