The Ransomes come home from an evening at the opera only to find they have been robbed. The thieves took everything. The furniture, the appliances, the medicine cabinet off the wall. The only things they have left are the clothes they are wearing.

English humor at its best finds the Ransomes learning to live a lifestyle far different from the luxurious one they had before.

A quirky little story. The Ransomes must learn to deal with the loss of every single thing they owned -- right down to the toilet paper -- and adjust accordingly. This is made more difficult by the fact that they (especially Mr. Ransome) are fairly rigid folk.

Mrs. Ransome experiences something of an awakening or sense of freedom from this "wiping clean of the slate," so that when the surprise ending comes, she appears to be ready for it, even though it was completely unexpected.

The book had its moments but as it progressed it seemed to go off tangent. It reads like one long-winded run-on sentence held together by a string of "and thens".

RELEASE NOTES:

Taking to the next meeting.
