This is a fantastic read, quite short, just 181 pages, so it won't cause your Mount TBR to tumble!
The book is written from the perspective of Mr Bones, canine companion of Willy G. Christmas. It is NOT overly sentimental and mushy, but sensitively explores the life of Willy who is homeless, and dissects the relationship between the two partners. The second half of the book turns to Mr.Bones attempt to find Timbuktu.... can't say more or it will spoil it. Beautifully written and thought provoking.

From Back Cover
"In a world in which many people get treated like dogs, Paul Auster has elected to tell us the story of a dog's life, and by the end of this brief, extroadinary book he has made us think, feel and even dream along with his canine Mr Bones. By stepping outside the frame of our own species, Auster allows us to see ourselves afresh, through the eyes of the loving, half-comprehending, half-mystified aliens who live within our homes" Salman Rushdie

As a fan of Paul Auster, I've read most of his novels. For some reason this one had completely passed me by and I was really interested to read it. I thought the idea of the story being told from the perspective of a dog might be too sentimental but I should have known better. This is a captivating and touching read which has moved me to buy my own copy.

Really enjoyed this book. It goes straight into the story and shows a lot of inside into the feeling of dogs - we've got an English Spinger Spaniel, and I could find her ever so often in that book! But it's more than "just a dog story", particularly in the first part where his "Master", the homeless Willi is still alive and talking a lot...

What can I say? I want my own copy & I want my own Mr Bones.

I loved this book & I admit that I had a little tear at the end.

If you are on this list then you are in for a treat. Off to Winterson next.

Parsleyraisin passed this tome yesterday and raved about it. She loved it so much that she's put it on her wishlist, and I'm expecting to do the same.
Have loads of ring books here at he moment, but will try and get to this one as fast as I can.
Thanks - and for the bookmark which is travelling with the book :)

I want a Mr Bones too! A lovely little book, and a lovely little dog. I echo Parsleyraisin - I want a copy of the book and I wouldn't mind a real Mr Bones to be a friend to my cats.
On to the next player - with the lovely bookmark that is travelling round with the book.

Finished this book yesterday - didn't realise I hadn't journalled its arrival - Sorreeeee everyone!
I enjoyed reading about Mr Bone's exploits (I am an unashamed doglover) - though found myself drifting during Willy G's ramblings (even when I agreed with some of them). There were a few loose ends - but I guess life, and fiction, is like that.
And I, too, cried at the end.
Will send this on as soon as Catsalive sends address.

Very nice. I enjoyed chapter 2 in particular, with Mr. Bones' dreams & Willy's logorrhoea. Overall just a beautiful story told from the dog's point of view.

I'll send it on as soon as I get binkybuffy's address. Posted 15/8/5.

Journal Entry 17 by binkybuffy from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Wednesday, August 31, 2005
Enjoyed the book just as I always enjoy dog stories. A bit sad when he had to make his own way,but it is a good book for a dog lover.
