From Kirkus Reviews: California's formidable p.i. Kinsey Millhone (``A'' Is for Alibi, etc.), fired from her comfortable berth with Fidelity Insurance, now rents office space from busy Santa Teresa lawyer Lonnie Kingman. His usual outside investigator Morley Shine has died of a heart attack, and he hires Kinsey to take over the case that Morley was working on. It involves the upcoming trial of David Barney, acquitted of the six-year-old murder of his wife, Isabelle, but now being sued for wrongful death in civil court by Isabelle's first husband, Ken Voigt. Voigt, represented by Lonnie Kingman, is sure that Barney killed Isabelle and wants to keep her considerable fortune out of his hands. Lonnie thinks he has a strong case, buoyed by damning new evidence from drifter Curtis McIntyre. But what Kinsey finds as she begins to probe is a surprising number of people with reasons to hate Isabelle--among them Voigt's second wife, Francesca, and Isabelle's business mentor Peter Weidmann and his overprotective wife, Yolanda. She also uncovers curious gaps in Morley's files and begins to question his ``heart attack,'' as Lonnie's seemingly solid case collapses bit by bit, with her own life on the line in the gritty finale. A few years ago, I bought all of the Kinsey Millhone books (A-N, including some doubles). This is about where I felt the series started to really get good. Cover image doesn't match actual cover |

Thanks so much to khillz28 for sending this! I love these Reverse Relays and have now become a bit of an addict. ;-)
This is perfect timing because I just finished "H" and am curious to see how that cliffhanger plays out in "I."
Thanks again!

I just finished this one a few minutes ago, staying up well past my gotta-go-to-work-tomorrow bedtime. :)
I really enjoyed this entry in the Kinsey Millhone series. I think Kinsey has become such a strong character, and although each of these books tends to be somewhat predictable, the series just continues to get better.
Thanks again to khillz28 for sharing. I hope to be able to pass this along to another reader soon.

On its way to MysteryMish...enjoy!
Got this as a RABCK from mellion108. Thank you! I am working on getting all the series assembled so I can start reading them. I've read a few over the years and loved them. Kinsey is my kind of gal!
Another really good Kinsey Millhone mystery. I love the new story line of Harry's brother. These books are reliably good, and this one was especially good because I did not guess the ending. Sue Grafton always leaves lots of possible culprits which I like. I read someone's comment that the series really got good with "H," and I would tend to agree at this point. The last book and this one are even better than the previous ones.
What a great surprise to find after coming home from classes tonight! Thank you, MysteryMish. This one will fill in a gap for me in this series - I've read A through H, and J through L. Looking forward to reading this soon.
Another great Kinsey Millhone book. Henry's brother made a great character, and the story is fast-paced as usual. Thanks to MysteryMish for sending this one to me!
